Running for mum
You
might think the best place to be on a crisp winter morning is tucked up
in bed, especially on Mothers Day. But for about 20 UniSA exercise and
sports studies students and their lecturer, Dr Murray Drummond (pictured
with his wife and children), it was the banks of the River Torrens that
beckoned.
Dr Drummond and his students were up and at ‘em all for a good cause. The group ran the special Mothers Day fun run to raise money for breast cancer research.
Hundreds turned out in perfect running conditions for the two key events – an 8km run and a 4km run along the banks of the river.
With his family cheer squad standing by, Dr Drummond placed second in the 8km run. While he believes it was a reasonable performance for “an old guy”, we expected nothing less from the former triathlete.
Dr Drummond expects to round up even more students for the event next year.
“I think there is a real connection for students involved in the Health Perspectives course in first year,” Dr Drummond said.
“The event highlights the importance of physical activity and at the same
time provides a concrete example of health promotion in action.”
