UniSA scholarships of Endeavour
by Rodney Magazinovic
The
Endeavour programme is an Australian Government initiative, bringing
together under the one umbrella all of the Department of Education,
Science and Training's international scholarships, so that high
achieving students and scholars from around the world can undertake
study or research in Australia. The scholarships also provide
opportunities for Australian scholars to undertake research overseas.
Each Endeavour Cheung Kong award is valued at $25,000.
The Ian Wark Research Institute will host two students from the Indian Institute of Science, while the Centre for Advanced Manufacturing Research will host a postgraduate tutor from the University of Technology, Baghdad, Iraq.
Four locally based scholars, Andrew Beck, Yalei Hao, Dr Janet Edwards and Nikolaos Vogiatzis will travel to Hong Kong, China, Indonesia and Japan respectively to pursue further study.
Nikolaos Vogiatzis, a PhD student studying transport systems engineering, will continue his research at Ritsumeikan University in Japan where one of his co-supervisors is based. His project is investigating the importance of managing traffic and reducing costs associated with wasted time/fuel and lost productivity that results from traffic congestion.
“My research goal is to develop a traffic management system that saves
natural resources, gives people more time in the day and gives emergency
personnel better access on roads to save lives,” Vogiatzis said. “This
scholarship has provided me with a fantastic opportunity to work directly
with my Japanese supervisor in achieving this.”
