Physio students help hockey players

Sarah Armstrong and Nathan Hallion tend to a hockey player’s injured foot.

Two UniSA physiotherapy students have been putting theory into practice, providing physio support to the State Under 15 Women’s hockey team in the lead up to the national titles.

Sarah Armstrong and Nathan Hallion have been offering advice on everything from fitness regimes to injury management, in readiness for the national championships being held in Brisbane from September 23 to October 2.

Sarah, a hockey player herself, says working with the team has been a great learning experience.

“I’ve learned to communicate with the players and coach in terms they understand,” she says.

“If someone is injured, the most important thing is to give them as much information as possible – ultimately they will need to manage the injury and warm ups and cool downs themselves, as Nathan and I won’t be at the tournament. I’ve also learned that getting 14-year-old girls to listen can be hard work!”

“It’s been hard work deciding what is safe and realistic in terms of their fitness preparation, but I enjoy the challenge a lot. They are a great team, I hope they win.”

The team’s coach, Phill Armanas (who works at UniSA in Planning and Assurance Services) says Sarah and Nathan’s support has been invaluable.

“The arrangement gives the students the chance to apply what they have learnt in a way that provides real support to the amateur sporting community,” he said.

“They have really helped to build up the team’s confidence. We had help from physio students last year, and the team won the silver medal, so I’m hoping for a repeat performance.”
