Scholarships abound in 2005
By Lucy Schultz
In 2005 UniSA will offer more scholarships than ever before to
undergraduate students with a focus on students from financially
disadvantaged backgrounds and rural and remote areas.
UniSA offers a range of different scholarships for students studying at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and they are not necessarily always for those who are achieving the highest grades.
Next year, for example, there will be specific scholarships for students studying to become science and maths teachers.
These scholarships will complement the Commonwealth Learning Scholarships which were introduced in 2004.
The Commonwealth Learning Scholarships are available to all undergraduate students and focus on students from rural and remote areas, and low socioeconomic backgrounds.
There are two types of scholarships – Commonwealth Education Contribution scholarships, available to all students, and Commonwealth Accommodation scholarships, available to rural and remote students. These scholarships are offered for a maximum of four years.
UniSA is aware that the costs of education are increasing and is always looking for scholarship opportunities in partnership with industry and community organisations.
The University's Alumni and Development Office has been very successful in securing some substantial scholarships from both individuals and organisations that are keen to promote higher education and these go a long way to helping students.
In 2004, for example, a number of transition grants were offered to first year students to help them to make the transition to university study.
These grants were offered in five categories thanks to the generous support of our corporate partners, HomeStart Finance, Mutual Community, Nursing Agency of South Australia and CPS Credit Union. Funds from individuals, many of whom donate regularly to the annual scholarships campaign run by the UniSA Foundation Inc, also support the transition grants.
More information about scholarship and grant opportunities will be provided to new students with their enrolment information package and continuing students can expect an email with details about 2005 scholarship opportunities before November 2004.
