Master Design for Games

By Richard Watson

Students from the University of South Australia have won the tender to produce the corporate identity for the largest multi-sport festival in Australia.

Graphic design students from the South Australian School of Art, Visual Communication Consultancy at UniSA are developing the corporate identity for the 10th Australian Masters Games 2005 which will be held in Adelaide next October.

Elements of their successful design will be included on the games website, signage, leaflets, newsletters, press adverts, merchandising and even the medals that will be awarded to the participants.

The opportunity was awarded to UniSA because of the students’ ability to offer something different, general manager 10th Australian Masters Games 2005 Lachlan Clark said.

“We were looking for a fresh and innovative approach,” Clark said.

“The students have a lot of creative energy, an excellent portfolio of work and demonstrated value for money. They are also professional and organised, which is important as they will be providing ongoing liaison on creative and production issues.

“We are delighted to be able to invest in the future of South Australia by giving experience to some of the state’s most talented graphic design students.”

The project is being produced by students in their third year and forms an important part of their professional practice experience, according to UniSA visual communication director Fred Littlejohn.

“It is important to give students as much relevant industry experience as possible,” Littlejohn said.

“By securing a large and high profile project such as the Masters Games, students are gaining invaluable experience dealing with clients on a daily basis as well as applying their skills and knowledge.

“Visual Communications Consultancy has worked on a wide range of projects for the government, corporate sector and community organisations. Fees from these projects are re-invested in facilities to ensure the ongoing development of students.”

The Masters Games is held biennially and the last four games each attracted more than 10,000 participants.

The games generated $20 million for South Australia when the event was last held in Adelaide in 1999.
