WorkSmart
WorkSmart is a suite of professional development activities designed for professional staff between level HEO3 and HEO7 at the University of South Australia.

The program draws on the expertise and knowledge of UniSA staff, together with external training providers and consultants, to provide opportunities for professional staff to:
- Develop their skills and capabilities
- Share knowledge and good practice
- Enhance understanding of the University and its processes
- Build collaborative relationships and networks to support our ambitions.
How does WorkSmart work? (pdf 254kb) Workshop registrations should align to staff development plans and the following conditions apply to the program:
- The program is offered in two semesters – March to July & August to December
- Managers can pre-register staff for 2 workshops per semester.
- The program is then released to all professional staff to register for remaining workshop places
- Staff can email HRMworksmart@unisa.edu.au to go onto a waitlist for full workshops
- A cancellation policy of $100 per person will apply for cancellations with less than 72 hours notice unless special circumstances apply.
- Staff can attend a maximum of 4 workshops per year unless special circumstances apply and arrangement has been made by the manager.

Building your Professional Toolkit - Foundation topics
Cross cultural awareness
Overview: UniSA has a diverse student and staff population and welcomes the wide range of experience and knowledge this brings. This workshop will provide staff with the opportunity to share and discuss their experiences in working with people from different cultures and develop a greater awareness and understanding of cross cultural communication.
The interactive workshop will cover:
- UniSA’s student profile
- assessing your own cultural awareness
- the challenges and experiences of those from different cultures (including a student panel where current international students will share information about their Australian cultural experience)
- meaning and pronunciation of Asian names
- strategies for working with international students with English as a second language.

Impression management
Overview: Making a good first impression requires skill, an accurate awareness and understanding of self and an awareness and understanding of other people’s preferred styles. This workshop will provide a theoretical model and practical tips on Impression Management.
At the completion of this session, participants will be able to:
- explain the importance of impression and perception management
- explore the concept of “Moments Of Truth” (Albrecht) and “Cycle of Service”, and relate these models to their work
- challenge the idea that we should treat customers as we expect to be treated ourselves
- identify customers and stakeholders

Indigenous cultural awareness
Overview: The UniSA Indigenous Employment Strategy identifies cultural awareness as a vital component to ensure UniSA is a culturally safe and inclusive environment. Introduction to professional writing
Overview: ‘It is a writer’s responsibility to be clear, not the reader’s responsibility to understand.’ This workshop gives participants an overview of effective planning for writing tasks and the skills required to communicate well, including: basic design, grammar and plain language. The workshop also provides participants with a range of tools and resources to further develop their writing skills back in the workplace.

Minute taking

Project management principles (beginner)
Overview: The key principles to effective project management can be applied to any job, task or project. The Write Stuff
Overview: The Write Stuff is an intensive one−day business writing workshop with a difference. Music, theatre, animation and video engage, inform and reinforce learning. Participants leave with a sound knowledge of the principles of effective business writing, a range of practical strategies to use at work, and ongoing support from Cool Rules.
At the completion of this workshop you will:

Writing for Senior Management Group

- ensuring staff understand the requirements and expectations of SMG
- ensuring there is a common understanding of the process of submitting written documents to SMG and the roles of various staff
- sharing good practice and ideas for effectively managing writing tasks

Writing that works
Overview: Writing that works is much more than a well crafted product, whether it is a piece of correspondence, a report, a contribution to a publication, a draft policy or procedures, or briefing notes. To be successful, it needs to be written with understanding and insight into the context, be clear in scope and intent, and mindful of the particular individuals it seeks to inform.
The workshop will cover:
- scoping the problem (function)
- establishing the context/s
- understanding the audience/s (and sponsor/s)
- choosing the right genre (form)
- choosing effective forms of presentation (words, pictures, structure, navigation...)
- refining the draft
- launching the product
- evaluating effectiveness, doing better next time.
To make the most of the workshop, participants are invited to bring along something they have written recently or a work in progress as a focus for developing their personal skills.

A highly interactive program designed to assist managers and supervisors to build the performance, motivation and capacity of their team through working within the PDM framework of regular one-on-one meetings, with a focus on identifying individual strengths and development areas, and providing individual coaching development.
You will identify the benefits of maintaining a focus on individual and team development, and how it can help to build team motivation and productivity. You will use a simple framework of steps to learn how to identify individual strengths, development areas and you will be introduced to the skills needed to undertake effective developmental coaching conversations, practising these skills using relevant case studies.

Confidently forming networks
Overview: Networking is connecting with people internally and externally to share information and develop mutually beneficial relationships. To sustain good personal and business relationships both parties must benefit in some way. Two of the most important networking skills one can develop are listening and asking questions. These two skills help develop genuine connections.
This workshop will give some practical skills and tips to develop a professional network, make connections naturally at networking functions and maintain a professional network.
The workshop will cover:
- what are the challenges you face networking or developing a professional network, internally and externally?
- what is networking and what are the “rules” or “protocols”?
- attending a networking event: Preparation, overcoming anxiety and developing confidence, meeting people, making conversation and follow up.
- maintaining the conversation: key interpersonal skills, active listening, asking questions, being genuine, real, and relaxed.
- maintaining your network
- professional networking bodies and events in higher education sector and/or your specialty areas.

Interview skills
Overview: Attending interviews can be a nerve-racking experience, especially when faced by a panel of three or more people, which is common in the university environment. On top of that, one of the hardest things about attending interviews at UniSA is being interviewed by people you know and work with! Understanding the interview process and preparing well can help you to overcome some of the nerves of being interviewed and turn your interview into a real opportunity to develop your career.
This workshop will cover the following topics:
- the aims and goals of interviews
- purpose, process and other important elements in recruitment activities and interviews
- selling yourself, presenting with confidence
- interviewing techniques and styles of questioning
- behavioural interviewing, why is it used, when is it recommended?

Pre-work: Read through the recruitment and selection for applicants guide before the workshop.
Bring along a copy of your current curriculum vitae (CV)/resume and a written response you have prepared to a selection criterion from a UniSA position. Common selection criteria for UniSA HEO 3-6 positions include:
Sound interpersonal, verbal and written skills that are appropriate for communicating to a diverse range of people and cultures at a variety of levels.
Highly developed organisational skills to manage multiple priorities and projects within tight timelines.
Demonstrated ability to contribute to the development, implementation and continuous improvement of procedures and administrative systems (electronic and paper-based).
Workshop overview: Preparing for a job application can be exciting and daunting at the same time! This workshop will give participants an overview of the application process and the specific recruitment and selection processes at UniSA, as well as an opportunity to review their current CV/resume.
This session will be conducted with internal Human Resource professionals who will work with you to improve your understanding of addressing selection criteria and tailoring your CV/resume for different roles. Participants will learn about best practice strategies for presenting information in a CV/resume and will have time to ask questions about the presentation and content of their own CV/resume.

Aspiring Leaders Program
Overview: This leadership development program is designed for staff currently in HEO5-HEO6 (self managed/project officer type) positions who wish to prepare themselves for the next leadership/management position or promotion. The program consists of 4 half day sessions conducted over a four month period, with a month between each session for participants to complete development activities.
The workshop series is designed to strengthen the participant’s personal and professional foundation and give practical skills to prepare them for the next level of leadership/management. Participants are encouraged throughout the program to increase self knowledge, embrace opportunities to take on the new and increase trust in themselves and their capacity to extend themselves.
Session 1: Preparing yourself to lead… strengthening your personal
foundation. Self and professional development for leadership/ management
This session will explore the skills, strengths and qualities needed to be
an effective leader in the Higher Education Sector today and participants
own unique combination of skills and qualities, values, achievements and
beliefs to prepare them to lead.
Session 2: Confidence, making decisions, autonomy, stepping up and
managing up!
Building on from session one, participants will explore how to trust
themselves and their unique personal foundation to make decisions, act with
autonomy and develop more confident in their ability, manage themselves and
manage up.
Session 3: Time management, self management, career management,
becoming politically savvy!
Session three will give participants the opportunity to explore possible
future career options for them, understand how to manage themselves and
their time as well as organisational politics to make the next career move a
reality!
Session 4: Maintaining a life, whilst progressing your career!
Our lives can become out of balance when single mindedly pursuing a career.
This last session will look at the whole person, what is really important in
all aspects of the participant’s life and how looking after the “whole self”
can actually assist one in winning that next promotion!
The program uses an “action- reflection” methodology, so participants will need to be prepared to commit to some additional time between sessions for reflection and follow up work.

2012 Technicians’ forum
The Organisational Development team and the UniSA chapter of TechNet SA will again invite staff to attend the annual Technicians’ forum in the April teaching break. The forum will provide participants with the opportunity to meet and network with technical staff from across the University, discuss current issues and receive updates on UniSA initiatives. Train the Trainer
Overview: This program provides new trainers with the skills and knowledge to plan and present effective and interactive training sessions. The program is completed over 4 days and will provide skills in 3 broad areas – learning styles, preparation & delivery skills:
- psychology of adult learning
- preparation of training materials
- writing learning objectives and session plans
- developing delivery techniques
- practical delivery session.
The successful completion of the practical on Day 4 will provide participants with nationally accredited units from the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment [TAE40110].
Attendance and completion of projects within the training program will
ensure that a ‘Statement of Attainment’ will be issued for the following:

2012 Office professionals’ forum
The Organisational Development team is pleased to advise that the Office professionals’ forum will now be held annually. The forum is designed to bring together staff whose roles include personal assistant duties or support to senior staff in schools, division offices, research areas and central units. The forum will provide an opportunity to network and share information and good practice.
