Opportunities for Academic Staff

UniSA offers academic staff an array of professional development opportunities. Details of workshops and seminars available to academic staff can be found each month in the section of the website called Development at a glance, or by going to the sites listed here.

New Staff
An induction program involving a mix of face-to-face sessions, on-line and text based resources is available for all new academic staff. The scope of this varies according to employment status (continuing, fixed term contract, sessional). Details of what’s on offer, including on-line resources are available on our Induction site.

Indigenous staff
The Professional Development for Indigenous Staff initiative provides funding to local areas to support the professional development of Indigenous staff who are newly appointed to UniSA. Further information is provided in the guidelines.

New Roles
Workshops are provided for staff new to roles such as Program Directors and Course Co-ordinators. Details of these are made available through our monthly Development at a glance bulletins.

Sessional staff
The Quick Guide for Sessional Staff will help you find answers to many of the questions you may have about the University and your role.

Tutoring @ UniSA is a 3 hour face-to-face workshop designed to improve the small-group teaching skills of academic staff. A key resource is the Planning for success booklet, a practical resource for all teaching staff who run active learning classes at UniSA (tutorials, practicals, workshops, seminars, studios, practical classes etc).

Teaching and learning
For staff new to the University, the Teaching @ UniSA program provides the first steps towards developing teaching practices within the University's policy framework. Teaching @UniSA forms part of the Graduate Certificate in Education (University Teaching) which is offered through the School of Education and jointly taught by staff from the Learning and Teaching Unit and the School of Education.

In less then five minutes, the in a nutshell series will provide you with enough information to make an informed decision about whether you would like to learn more about a teaching and learning topic or not, and provide key links and resources to get you started.

Research Education
The Supervisor Professional Development Program for higher degree by research (HDR) supervisors and students is provided by the Learning and Teaching Unit in collaboration with the Graduate Studies Office. The Graduate Studies Office also coordinates a comprehensive program of professional development through the Research Education and Support Activities program (RESA), using the services and resources of Learning and Teaching Unit, the Library, Research Services and academic staff in the Divisions.

Research
UniSA offers professional development opportunities; services and resources to assist academic staff develop their research skills and practice. Visit the developing your research site for an overview of what is on offer.

Contextual awareness forums
UniSA hosts a series of staff development activities under the banner of Contextual Awareness seminars. These aim to inform staff of challenges and opportunities shaping the environment within which UniSA operates and that, in turn, should inform development of institutional policy and practice.

Other Continuing Professional Development
The University provides support for staff seeking to upgrade qualifications as well as time release for further research and study. Details of the schemes are set out in the attached policies. Staff seeking further information should explore these links and discuss the issue with their supervisor.

Women’s development program
UniSA provides both professional and academic women with opportunities to engage in constructive development activities and to link their individual learning needs with organisational priorities. The women's development program complements the full range of development activities offered across the University.

Division and Institute activities
Professional Development initiatives and support are also provided by the academic Divisions and Research Institutes and by many Schools, research groups and centres. Staff should consult their local Divisional and Research Institute websites for further information.
