A Convenient truth, the Colour of Money is Green

IBM has had a Global Environment Policy since 1971 and current corporate policies cover all aspects of their business including operations, manufacturing, waste management and water conservation.   The ICT Industry is currently responsible for producing 2% of the Global Carbon Emissions, the same level of emissions produced by the Airline Industry.  As an industry, we spent $29Billion in 2007 on power and cooling in our data centres and we had over $140Billion worth of excess and unutilised server capacity.   As a response to this, IBM launched their Project 'Big Green' in 2007, an initiative to consolidate their 3,900 Global Data Centres and to reduce their carbon footprint and power costs.  To date, IBM has saved over $250Million and consolidated from 3,900 to 6 Data Centres.

This presentation will focus on how IBM achieved this and will take you through some innovative strategies IBM has developed with organisations globally to drive Green Business Strategies that suit every size and type of organisation.  You will learn how to position IT as an innovator rather then a cost centre within your institutions and discover how thinking 'green' can improve your bottom line while also serving your civic and (potential) regulatory responsibilities.
