International Links

Missouri University of Science and Technology

Professor Roger LaBoube, the Director of the Centre for Cold-formed Steel Structures at the Missouri University of Science and Technology, visited UniSA on invitation in August 2001. Dr Julie Mills and Roger have co-authored a number of journal and conference papers on cold-formed structures.

Khon Kaen University

Don Cameron has been successful with the links with Khon Kaen University as previously reported. Don has accepted an invitation to become a member of the Advisory Committee to the Sustainable Infrastructure Research and Development Centre of the Department of Civil Engineering, Khon Kaen University.

Nihon University

Professor Akiba Shoichi from Nihon University has been invited to spend 2006 with SMAG to further his research into pavement engineering. The link arose from the sister city program between Mobara, Japan and the City of Salisbury.

UK Links

A visit to the UK in June gave Don Cameron the opportunity to visit two research groups, which have links to SMAG’s interests;

Nottingham Centre for Pavement Engineering, University of Nottingham
Rail Research UK, University of Birmingham

Correspondence with key personnel from these centres will continue.

Industry collaboration

Ancon Beton / Adelaide Brighton Cement

An industry partnership with Ancon Beton (international concrete consultancy) and Adelaide Brighton Cement has been established since March 2003. The collaboration should lead to more research and development in the concrete technology field. Adelaide Brighton Cement has continued to contribute undergraduate lectures on concrete technology, as well as supervising a final year honour’s project. See Collaborations

Rail CRC

Don Cameron is the UniSA leader of a project in Theme 2 of the Rail CRC, which involves research on the stability of railway formations. The industry partners are Australian Rail and Track Corporation (ARTC) and Queensland Rail. The 3-year project is in its third year and it supports 3.5 postgraduate students, one from University of Wollongong, and the remainder from UniSA. ERM (Environmental Recreation and Management) and CIS (Computer and Information Science) are involved through Joan Gibbs and John Boland, who are supervising postgraduate students related to the project.

City of Salisbury

Since the year 2000, the City of Salisbury has supported applied research by funding a PhD student to investigate the effects of soil movement and the suitability of various 'street' trees on expansive clay sites . In the first two years funding support was also provided by the Local Government Association. For more information visit  City of Salisbury Street Trees Project

Transport SA

Transport SA has been involved in a number of projects, including the formation of a Research Degree in Pavement Engineering, and currently a Pulsing Pavement Testing Facility for future research and development into unbound granular pavement materials.

O'Donnell Griffin

In 2004 O'Donnell Griffin continued their association with SMAG through involvement in a PhD  and Honours student project in the area of transmission tower strengthening.

Department for Administrative and Information Services

In 2003, Dr. Yan Zhuge secured funding from DAIS to support postgraduate research into retrofitting systems for older masonry buildings for potential earthquake events.

Koukourou Engineers

A royalty agreement has been struck between SMAG, a former UniSA honours student, the original software author and a consultant group (fmg Koukourou Engineers) for sales of updated software for the design of house footings.

ARC Linkage

Peter Kentish is involved with the Ian Wark Institute in an ARC Linkage Grant in biomedical engineering, entitled: “Advanced intramedullary nailing systems”. The project is expected to commence in 2006.
