Centre for Sleep Research
The Centre for Sleep Research is an internationally-recognised research
group and is considered a world leader in the field of sleep research. With
funding from the University of South Australia as well as government and
industry support, we are working to extend our understanding and perception
of human performance, sleep, fatigue and behaviour.
As the largest dedicated sleep research facility in Australia, CFSR features
a state-of-the-art sleep laboratory with extensive physiological monitoring
equipment and a cognitive psychomotor performance laboratory. We are able to
create time isolation or forced desynchrony protocols, during which
participants are completely isolated from the day/night cycle and all time
cues. This allows us to focus closely on the human biological rhythm or
body clock. We also use interactive driving simulators (including a
full-cab train simulator), to examine how complex task performance is
affected by sleep loss.
Our researchers are leaders in their field and continue to gain critical
acclaim for their expertise in the areas of human sleep, biological rhythms,
sleep disorders, workplace fatigue, shiftwork, fatigue modelling and risk
management.
The strategic aim of the Centre is to build on this success and further
expand our profile both domestically and abroad. We'll achieve this not only
by continuing to do research with important real-life applications, but also
through public education, training, and industry consultation aimed at
improving the world around us.
