The value of parks: A benefits study

The benefits visitors receive as a result of park experiences are extensive and may include improving fitness, strengthening family bonds, reducing tension and gaining an understanding of the natural environment. The desire for such benefits could affect the choices visitors make in relation to where, how, and when they are involved in recreation. Lack of understanding of the benefits visitors desire as a result of a park experience, and the attributes they are willing to trade-off to achieve those benefits, represents a serious gap in the knowledge of park management.

This project investigated characteristics of park visitors, including the personal benefits they desire and accrue as a result of their park experience, their level of attachment to parks, and their engagement in conservation activities. Metropolitan and regional parks in Victoria and South Australia were selected for the study.
