Playford Primary School
The
Playford Primary School
was briefed to explore new opportunities for
environmental design of school buildings. The resultant design incorporates
some twenty-five specific environmental initiatives predominantly to improve
the ability of the buildings to provide comfortable learning accommodation
with reduced energy input, compared with conventional school designs. To evaluate the school's performance the University of South Australia's Sustainable Energy Centre was engaged to monitor and analyse thermal conditions and energy consumption over the course of one year. This was done from January to December 2001.
The performance monitoring was undertaken with the support and co-operation of DECS, Playford Primary School, the Catholic Education Office and Catherine McAuley School. For the 2001 school year the building used 70% less energy per unit area than the control building which translates into a cost saving of approximately $3,880 a year.
