Specific eligibility requirements for CECS and CAS
In addition to the basic eligibility requirements, to be eligible for CECS or CAS, students are required to be undertaking:
- An undergraduate program of study as a Commonwealth supported student (as defined in the Higher Education Support Act 2003), OR
- One of the graduate entry bachelor degrees in education (MBCG, MBEG, LBGG, LBPG)
Additional CAS eligibility requirements
Students are not eligible for CECS or CAS if they have already received CECS or CAS for the maximum duration (equivalent of eight scholarship periods).
Specific eligibility requirements for CECS-Priority Discipline and CAS-Specialists
In addition to the basic eligibility requirements, to be eligible for CECS-Priority Discipline, students are required to be undertaking:
- A National Priority Discipline program in one of the broad degrees related to the field of Education, OR
- A major (in a National Priority Discipline Area) within the student's degree structure as part of the student's chosen program of study
In addition to the basic eligibility requirements, to be eligible for CAS-Specialists, students are required to:
- Be undertaking a specialists program as a Commonwealth supported student (as defined in the Higher Education Support Act 2003)
- Be enrolled as an internal student in a unit of study that forms part of their program of study. Some students may have exceptional circumstances preventing them from enrolling in any internal units; students enrolled externally may be deemed eligible in exceptional circumstances. For example, students with a disability or significant carer responsibilities
- relocate a distance greater than 100kms from their home to take up the study in the specialist program and incur additional accommodation costs.
Students are not eligible for CECS-Priority Discipline or CAS-Specialists if they have already received CECS-Priority Discipline or CAS-Specialists for the maximum duration (equivalent of eight scholarship periods).
Specific eligibility requirements for CECS-Associate Degree and CAS-Associate Degree
In addition to the basic eligibility requirements for a student to be eligible for CECS-Associate Degree or CAS-Associate Degree, students are required to be undertaking an Associate Degree program of study.
Additional CAS-Associate Degree eligibility requirements
Students are not eligible for CECS-Associate Degree or CAS-Associate Degree if they have already received CECS-Associate Degree or CAS-Associate Degree for the maximum duration (equivalent of four scholarship periods).
Specific eligibility requirements for CECS-Indigenous Enabling and CAS-Indigenous Enabling
In addition to the basic eligibility requirements, to be eligible for CECS-Indigenous Enabling or CAS-Indigenous Enabling, students are required to be undertaking an eligible enabling program either full time or part time, if studying part time, noting that:
- while studying part time and then wishes to progress to another form of Commonwealth Scholarships, then they must meet the full time requirement
- the student will not be eligible for to receive a Indigenous Access Scholarship
Additional CAS-Indigenous Enabling eligibility requirements
Both CECS-Indigenous Enabling and CAS-Indigenous Enabling are open to
Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Australian students.
Students are not eligible for CECS-Indigenous Enabling or CAS-Indigenous Enabling if they
have already received a CECS-Indigenous Enabling or CAS-Indigenous
Enabling for the maximum
duration (equivalent of two scholarships periods).
Specific eligibility requirements for Indigenous Access
In addition to the basic eligibility requirements for a student to be eligible for Indigenous Access, students are required to be a commencing student, and have accepted the offer of a place in; or be enrolled in; or undertaking a program in an eligible enabling program or an undergraduate program of study.
Indigenous Access is open to Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Australian students.
Students are not eligible for Indigenous Access if they have previously received an Indigenous Access (one-off payment).
Additional CAS requirements
In addition to the basic eligibility requirements and specific eligibility requirements described above for a student to be eligible for CAS, CAS-Associate Degree, and CAS-Indigenous Enabling scholarship UniSA must be satisfied that:
- within the four years immediately preceding the
commencement of the current higher education program of study, the
student:
i) has lived in a regional or remote area of Australia for a total of at least three years OR
ii) completed the final two years of schooling in a high school or college in a regional or remote area OR
iii) moved away from a regional or remote home to complete the whole or the majority of their secondary schooling at a high school or college in a major city OR
iv) has lived in regional or remote area of Australia for a total of at least two years and relocated from the regional or remote area to undertake vocational education and training (e.g. TAFE) for a maximum of two years duration immediately preceding commencement of their undergraduate course
- it was necessary for the student to move from the regional
or remote area in order to undertake their higher education study; or in
the case of paragraph (a. iii) and iv)) above, it was necessary for the
student to remain in a major city in order to undertake their higher
education study
- as a result of (b), the student will incur additional
accommodation costs
- the student is enrolled as an internal student in unit of study that form part of the program of study the student is undertaking. Some students may have exceptional circumstances preventing them from enrolling in any internal units. Some students enrolled externally may be deemed eligible in exceptional circumstances. For example, students with a disability or significant carer responsibilities.
In determining a student's eligibility for a CAS, UniSA will determine whether the student has lived in a rural or regional area consistent with Australian Bureau of Statistic's ASGC Remoteness Areas classification. The classifications are:
- Major Cities of Australia (MC)
- Inner Regional Australia (IR)
- Outer Regional Australia (OR)
- Remote Australia (R)
- Very Remote Australia (VR)

A student who has come from a locality classed as belonging to the Major Cities of Australia class will be deemed ineligible for a CAS.
