Parent/Guardian 1: Highest Educational Attainment (this can be any parent or guardian that you nominate)
|
This information has been requested by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) in Australia so that they can more accurately assess the socioeconomic status of students in higher education. The education level attained by student's parents is considered to be a very strong indicator of socioeconomic status. With this data they will be better informed when funding equity programmes, scholarships and other policies to ensure the participation of all social groups in higher education.
All commencing students are being asked to provide this information. This will provide DEEWR with the maximum possible options on the use of the data, including the assessment of its quality.
If you do not know the educational attainment of a parent then you can select the 'Don't know' option provided. This option can be used for either parent/guardian 1 or 2, or both.
No, you do not have to provide this information. However, doing so will assist the Australian government to make better funding decisions and provide better higher education services, which will be of benefit to UniSA and all its students.
DEEWR has investigated the issue of privacy implications in collecting this information. DEEWR's legal team has provided advice that the capture of this information does not breach Information Privacy Principles (the IPPs) set out in section 14 of the Australian Privacy Act because it is considered that 'personal information' would not be collected. That is, information about an individual whose identity is apparent, or can reasonably be ascertained.
All commencing students are being asked to provide this information. This will provide DEEWR with the maximum possible options on the use of the data, including the assessment of its quality.
To account for same-sex or single-parent relationships we need to ask the gender of each parent/guardian.
We have added a 'don't know' category to differentiate between those respondents who did not wish to provide a response and those who answered but could not provide a response based on the categories provided. Where no response is appropriate - for example for the second parent in single-parent relationship either category can be used, depending on your preference.
This decision is entirely up to you. However, they would normally be the people who, during most of your school years, were your parents or guardians. There is no significance to the numbering and Parent/Guardian 1 is not considered to be more influential than Parent/Guardian 2.
If you do not wish, or are unable, to give information about a second parent in a single-parent relationship then choose the 'I do not wish to provide this information' or 'don't know' option for parent/guardian 2. It is entirely your decision to make and there is no right or wrong response.
If you are comfortable providing this information then please complete the questions as asked. It is entirely your decision to make and there is no right or wrong response. Your response is confidential and the information you give will not be reported to DEEWR in any way that will identify you.
