Centre for Drug Formulation and Delivery
The
Centre for Drug Formulation and Delivery (CDFD) is an educational, research
and pharmaceutical production facility based at UniSA's Sansom Institute.
Established in 2007, the CDFD aims to harness South Australia's pharmaceutical science expertise to become a world leader in the development of novel drug delivery technologies.
The Centre boasts a new purpose-built laboratory with pilot-scale pharmaceutical manufacturing equipment that provides UniSA researchers and Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Science students access to state-of-the-art facilities to match industry standards.
With support from government and the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors, the CDFD is involved in collaborative projects, developing new products technologies with the ultimate aim of improving human health.

CDFD advisory board
The CDFD advisory board - which includes representatives from UniSA's Sansom Institute and Ian Wark Research Institute, the Royal Adelaide Hospital and the pharmaceutical industry - meets three times a year to review progress and recommend strategic initiatives.
Advisory board members include: Professor Allan Evans; Frank Peddie; Des Williams; Dr Jiping Wang; Dr Andrew Davey; Associate Professor Bob Milne; Dr David Foster, Professor Ross McKinnon; Rachael Penning-Bourne, Professor Clive Prestidge, Jason Valentine. Industry representatives: Keith Smith (Virient P/L); Kellie La Fontaine (PharmaQest); Angelo Morella (Mayne Pharma International).
The CDFD is involved in various University, government and industry-funded projects aimed at developing better pharmaceutical products and drug delivery technologies.
Some of our current projects include:
- Buccal patch technology for drug delivery
- A transdermal contraceptive (in collaboration with PharmaQest Pty Ltd and Acrux Ltd)
- Evaluation and development of an improved slow release formulation for treating cystinosis (for Sigma Tau, USA)
- Proliposome delivery systems for oral administration of poorly soluble drugs
- In vivo study of novel oral formulations of a model drug (indomethacin).
The CDFD enjoys productive relationships with a number of collaborators and clients including:
-
The Ian Wark Research Institute (UniSA)
-
CPR (UniSA)
-
PharmaQest Pty Ltd (UniSA spin-off company)
-
Mayne Pharma International
-
Metabolic Pharmaceuticals Pty Ltd
-
