Laboratories and FacilitiesTop technology, world class research

The Sansom Institute is committed to continually investing in and upgrading its laboratories and technical capabilities to ensure that its researchers have access to the kind of environment needed to nurture world-class research.

Opened in 2005, the Basil Hetzel Building at UniSA’s City East campus is home to several new research laboratories designed with best-practice laboratory standards in mind. Specialised pharmacy, microbiology, biotechnology and histopathology/haematology labs include up-to-date equipment such as advanced fume extraction systems, computer modelling facilities and a microprocessor-controlled autoclave.

Other laboratory facilities developed specifically for Sansom Institute researchers are too numerous to list in full, but include a mini drug manufacturing facility (with a new fluid bed dryer and tablet press), state-of-the-art chemical analysis and HPLC equipment (including three recently-purchased LCMS’s) as well as extensive general laboratory space set aside for postgraduate research students.

As well as having access to the Sansom’s facilities, many of our researchers work on collaborative projects based at some of South Australia’s most advanced laboratories, such as those at the Institute for Medical and Veterinary Science (IMVS), the Royal Adelaide Hospital and Hanson Institute, and the Women’s and Children’s Hospital.
