From the Director

Professor Kerin O'DeaWelcome to the Sansom Institute

There has arguably never been a more inspiring time to be involved in health and biomedical research. In an era where technology and treatment options are advancing alongside a growing awareness of the importance of prevention and early intervention, the Sansom is riding a wave of innovation, dedicated to research that anticipates and responds to the health care needs of a rapidly changing world.

At the heart of the Sansom Institute’s research agenda is the application of research into products and practice to bring about better health outcomes. We believe a good idea that can’t be applied is as wasteful as a medicine that can’t be administered or a policy that excludes those most in need.

Our members have specialist expertise across a broad spectrum, encompassing biomedical, clinical, population health, and health services research. The Institute brings together this diverse knowledge base to address a key set of priorities centred around improving systems and services, boosting early intervention strategies, creating more effective therapies, and addressing the health issues affecting our most disadvantaged citizens.

Situated in the centre of Adelaide’s premier medical research precinct and housing state-of-the-art laboratory and research facilities, the Sansom Institute provides a dynamic and collaborative environment where postgraduate students and early career researchers work and learn alongside internationally-renowned scientists.

We are proud of our strong links with South Australia’s leading medical research organisations and hospitals, as well as numerous interstate and overseas universities and research institutions. This close engagement with the broader scientific community gives our staff, students and graduates the opportunity to develop their expertise and ideas in stimulating environments all over the world.

Whether you are a scientist, health professional, prospective postgraduate student or simply someone who is interested in the exciting possibilities of health research, I warmly welcome you to the Sansom Institute. Please take your time to explore this website and learn more about our activities.

Our members are committed solving problems for industry and the health care and related sectors - that’s what outcome-driven research is all about.
