A couple of years ago, the University of South Australia's Samstag Program produced a very special calendar to celebrate the passage, in 2000 and 2001, between old and new millenniums. The "2000/2001 Millennial Calendar of Samstag Classics" was so popular we kept being asked to produce another!
Like its predecessor, the 2003/2004 Calendar of Samstag Classics features the work of twelve, high-achieving Samstag Scholars - each work distinctively complementing a particular key date in each month of the year.
In this way, for example, Shaun Gladwell's dynamically airborne skateboarder is readymade as an icon for "Independence Day, 4 July", whereas Matt Warren's polluting industrial smog perfectly captures the sombre truth of August's "Hiroshima Day".
Certainly, Callum Morton might not have intended his Toys 'R' Us to become an illustration for "Christmas Day" - though it is rather apt - but who could deny that Tim Horn's Glass Slipper (Ugly Blister), was not purpose-designed for "Valentine's Day", February 2004. And does Rebecca Hobbs's strange and alluring, Complex Social Groups express October's "United Nations Day", or is it simply, "Halloween"?
By all means make your own connections - find the match with Mothers' and Fathers' Days, Australia Day, Good Friday and Anzac Day, St. Patrick's and of course, Thanksgiving Day. Enjoy the skill and imagination of these distinguished Samstag artists.
The "2003/2004 Calendar of Samstag Classics", starts in July 2003 and finishes in June 2004.
