How to find a journal impact factor and its relative ranking

  1. Log into ISI Web of Knowledge via the Library database page using your UNINET User name and Password
  2. Select Journal Citation Reports from the 'Products & Features' drop down box in the ISI Web of Science green banner at the top of the page and click on the GO button
  3. Select JCR Science or JCR Social Science Edition depending on the field of research of the journal you are seeking. (If you have automatically gone into one of these screens, and want to change your option, click on the Welcome button)
  4. Select Search for a specific journal and click the Submit button
  5. Use the 1) Search by: drop down menu to search for a journal using the full journal title, abbreviated journal title, title word or ISSN. (Hint: Your best option is to enter the ISSN in the format shown in the search examples on the screen. Alternatively, you can use the full journal title which you can find by clicking on view list of full journal titles just above the search box.)
  6. Copy and paste your selection into the 2) Type search term: box and click search. Only journals included in the Thomson databases will be displayed in the results. The impact factor will be shown in the table of data for each journal.
  7. Click on the journal abbreviated name and Journal Information will be displayed.
  8. Click on View Journal Summary List (grey button) in Subject Categories (note that there may be more than one subject category). A list of all the journals in that subject category will be displayed
  9. Use the Sorted by: drop down box to select to sort by Impact Factor and click sort again to access the ranking relative to the category.

Please note: Some journals appear in more than one subject category and this will be displayed in the Subject Categories information (see 8. above). To view the impact factor for each of these subject categories you will need to repeat the process from numbers 8-9. (The journal may rank very differently in different subject categories.)
