Changes to the ERA Submission Guidelines

2010 Full ERA submission process for all clusters (1-8)

Reference periods:

It is likely that the Staff Census Date for the 2010 Full ERA submission process will be 31 March 2009.

It is expected that the reference period for Research Outputs and Research Income in the 2010 full ERA submission will be as follows:

Data type Reference period Years
Research Outputs 1 January 2003 - 31 December 2008 6
Research Income 1 January 2006 - 31 December 2008 3

2009 ERA Trial - Clusters 1 and 2 only
(Physical, Chemical and Earth Sciences & Humanities and Creative Arts)

Differences in the ERA Submission Guidelines dated March 2009 from the Draft Guidelines dated January 2009:

General

The Guidelines clearly state that the Cluster One and Two Submissions in 2009 are a 'trial' with the full ERA process occurring in 2010 (Clusters One to Eight).

Esteem measures have been deleted.

Peer review

This section has been further defined by the inclusion of a statement that 'The 20 percent of outputs must be selected for peer review for each FoR code subject to ERA peer review'. Any output type can be selected and it doesn't matter which eligible researcher the outputs relate to - ie the 20 percent can all be from one eligible staff member.

Submission

Includes the process for sourcing the Scopus electronic identifier (EID) for each journal article published in a journal indexed by Scopus.

Outcome reporting

Outcomes of the 2009 ERA Trial cluster 1 and 2 evaluations will not be published at an institutional level but the cluster evaluations to be undertaken in the 2010 Full ERA submission (clusters 1-8) will involve publication of institutional results.

Timelines (Trial - Clusters 1 and 2 only)

Cluster 1

Submission period 1 June 2009 - 3 July 2009
Evaluation 17 August 2009 - 2 October 2009
Outcome reporting November 2009

Cluster 2

Submission period 3 August 2009 - 21 August 2009
Evaluation 24 September 2009 - 13 November 2009
Outcome reporting December 2009

Eligible researcher criteria and researcher data

The Field of Research (FoR) code(s) assigned to an eligible researcher do not determine the eligibility of their research outputs for a particular cluster.

Higher Degree by Research students are not eligible unless they are an employee of the institution at the census date. This includes casual appointments.

Adjunct academic staff employed at the census date are eligible but their output must show a 'publication association' with UniSA (eg in a byline).

Staff classified as 'Other' should only be submitted where the researcher has produced one or more eligible outputs.

FTE data is not required for casual employees or adjuncts. FTE is as at census date.

The ARC will accept submissions to the ERA trial (Clusters 1 and 2) with eligible researcher data containing FoR codes in Clusters Three to Eight but the portion of data not relevant to clusters 1 or 2 will not be provided to RECs. The FoR codes assigned to an eligible researcher do not determine the eligibility of their research outputs for a particular cluster.

Research outputs

For the PCE cluster only those articles appearing in journals indexed by Scopus and identified in the ERA PCE Journal List will inform the calculation of bibliometrics.

The definition of HCA-specific research outputs has been refined.

Original creative works can be reported as:

Applied measures

Commercialisation income now in line with research income eg can be assigned as many FoRs as is relevant.

The new guidelines provide further clarification on the definition of commercialisation income.
