The REUGV recognises that violence and abuse:
• Has a gendered dimension
• Occurs in a socio-political context mediated by power imbalances
• Cannot be understood without consideration to culture, race, sexuality and identity
• Is the sole responsibility of the perpetrator
• Have considerable impacts on those affected, but acknowledges the capacity for resilience, strength and change in people's lives.

The REUGV promotes the following intervention principles to gendered violence:
• The primacy of women's and children's safety
• The responsibility and accountability of men for their use of violence and abuse
