International perspectives on research
This is the seventh of the Research Degree Graduate Qualities.
7. demonstrates international perspectives in research in a discipline or professional area and as a leading citizen.
Introduction
The seventh generic quality involves demonstrating international perspectives in research in a discipline or professional area and as a leading citizen. Higher degree by research students should be able to see their specific field of research as extending internationally, acknowledging that research paradigms cross national boundaries. Of course, each particular discipline area will have its own international orientation and the research student should be aware of this. The supervisor will ensure that the research proposal makes use of appropriate international sources and that there is the intention to contact professional organisations and publishing communities outside Australia.
Where appropriate, the research
proposal should also note if the research will require sensitivity
to cultural difference. This will be
especially crucial when cultural difference raises
ethical dilemmas. In addition, the
thesis could comment upon how the new knowledge developed through the
research might be appraised in terms of epistemological processes and
knowledge frameworks that are used or are dominant in other relevant
cultural settings. This quality would be addressed within the research
proposal and assessed by the
research proposal
review panel and the
Examination Panel in judging the significance of the research.
