Workshop descriptions for Writers' circles

This page outlines the format and content of workshops for the Writers' circles on campus core series, part of UniSA's Research Education Support Activities (RESA). This series is for international and English as an additional language research students only.

Commencing

1. Research 'downunder' and reading research

This session focuses on doing research 'downunder', attaining expectations and research reading for the proposal (English for research writing series)

2. Writing using the literature

This session examines ways language is used to review, summarise, paraphrase, generalise and critique when citing research studies. For example, variation of reporting verbs and verb tense will be discussed. (English for research writing series).

3. Grammar for research writing

This session examines how our understanding of grammar is used to clarify meanings, enhance a logical flow of an argument, and achieve an appropriate style of writing the research proposal. (English for research writing series).

4. Using disciplinary specific language

This session examines several discipline specific models of writing to highlight the research writing styles changes according to discipline area. (English for research writing series).

5-8  Feedback on writing

These sessions provides you with the opportunity of receiving and providing feedback on your peers' draft research proposals. Email two pages of your writing to Monica Behrend prior to the session.

Repeat of commencing Writers' circles (2 days)

Day 1,  Part 1: This session focuses on doing research 'downunder', attaining expectations and reading in order to write the literature review for your proposal.  

Day 2,  Part 2: This session focuses on the language choices in the literature review and considers how grammar is used to clarify meanings, enhance your argument, and achieve an appropriate style of research writing.

Continuing to completing

Giving and receiving feedback on drafts of writing

These sessions provide you with the opportunity of receiving and providing feedback on your peers' draft research writing. This feedback is valued by students. Email two pages of your writing to Monica Behrend prior to the session.

English for research writing

English for research writing is a 5-day retreat on using the literature to write research. This workshop will focus on critical writing, and writing the literature review and thesis discussion (new resources will be presented). 

English for writing a research paper

These sessions provide you with the opportunity of receiving and providing feedback on your peers' draft research writing. This feedback is valued by students. Email two pages of your writing to Monica Behrend prior to the session.

This session will examine the genre of a research paper with a focus on the language features. It will also closely examine the way the literature is used to construct an argument. Part of the session will also focus on writing effective abstracts.

Language for developing the thesis argument

This session examines features of an effective academic argument and how language choices strengthen the argument and enhance the logical flow of the position or thesis.

Facilitated writing retreat

A research education adviser will support you to develop your academic writing skills in relation to your research project.
