This workshop will set the examination process in the context of the wider purpose of the contemporary doctorate, before moving on to look at what the role of the examiner is and what examiners are looking for in the Humanities and Social Science PhD. (Social sciences are taken to include Business and Management, Economics, Education, International Studies, Public and Social Policy, Psychology, Sociology and cognate disciplines, and any thesis which adopts the philosophy and methods of these disciplinary and topic areas.) The session will look at what constitutes a 'good' and a 'bad' thesis and explore ways in which the lessons of this can be imparted to HDR students.
Supervisors and both experienced and intending examiners will leave this session with:
Professor Alistair McCulloch, Academic Developer Research Education
