This session explores some of the key issues involved in preparing for academic practice in the contemporary higher education environment. Understandings of, and expectations associated with, academic practice differ across disciplinary and institutional contexts. This workshop is designed to cater for mid-candidature higher degree students studying in the Division of Education, Arts and Social Sciences who are considering employment as an academic as a career option. The workshop will be delivered via presentations by senior academics in the Division of EASS. A panel of early career researchers in academic posts will also discuss what aspects of their PhD experience has proven most beneficial in securing a post, and given them the skills and confidence to undertake their duties. Continuing EASS higher degree students will leave this session with an increased awareness of the following roles involved in being an academic: scholarly inquiry, presenting and publishing, teaching and supervision, service to institution, discipline, profession and wider community.
This session explores some of the key issues involved in preparing for applied professions in industry. Co-facilitated with the Careers team, the workshop is designed to cater for mid-candidature higher degree students studying in the Division of Education, Arts and Social Sciences who are considering employment in the applied professions as a career option. Students will be provided with information concerning how the labour market operates and how this affects job-search strategies, and the importance of targeting job search. Students will also be provided with advice on how to prepare a professional profile for self-marketing purposes. Industry guest speakers will also be invited to discuss issues including opportunities and keys to success in securing a professional career, and the benefits of a doctorate in an industry position.
