Student marketers make a difference

Businesses
are turning to UniSA marketing students for advice.
Don’t be surprised if some time soon McLaren Vale wine labels take on a new appearance, trumpeting some of the region’s less well-known virtues.
And don’t be surprised if you suddenly start to recognise Tim Sylvester’s photos, or hear more about the UNESCO office based right here in Adelaide.
These three examples are the latest of a host of businesses turning to UniSA Master of Marketing students for advice.
Over the past 18 months, organisations as diverse as the Port Adelaide Football Club, the ALP, Rostrum SA, the St Kilda Tramway Museum and the Riverland Wine Industry Development Council have presented students with real-life marketing case studies.
And coordinator of the Advanced Integrated Marketing and Firm Strategy course, Dr Hervé Remaud says those businesses have received valuable marketing advice in return.
"Each organisation has a specific strategic marketing problem
they want the students to help solve,"
Dr Remaud said.
"After they have conducted a literature review, redefined the nature of the problem and conducted surveys, the students must come up with a series of marketing recommendations which they then present to the organisation."
The 11 students who worked on three recent projects presented their findings and recommendations to their "clients".
A French student who worked on a plan for McLaren Vale Grape, Wine & Tourism, Lila Tournier said working on a real-life case study was both interesting and challenging.
"This project has been excellent practice for future work opportunities, and a valuable thing to add to the résumé," she said.
"I really enjoyed discovering ‘green’ consumer trends, developing strategies on slogan implementation and ways to increase brand salience and awareness of McLaren Vale. And I really enjoyed presenting our findings and recommendations to the panel."
