In brief

Indigenising Psychology

The School of Psychology and the David Unaipon College of Indigenous Education and Research, in partnership with the Australian Psychological Society, hosted the inaugural Psychology and Indigenous Australians Conference at City West campus last month. The conference was followed by a Cultural Competence workshop for practitioners.

Over two days, 140 delegates attended - almost half from outside of South Australia - with a high proportion of Indigenous academics, practitioners and field workers.

The many highlights included keynote addresses by leading Indigenous psychologists Dr Tracy Westerman, Professor Judy Atkinson and Dennis McDermott.

Conference convenor Dr Rob Ranzijn said the conference was extremely well received and that he and his colleagues are already looking forward to the second national conference in 2008.

"We are engaged in a long-term nationwide project to indigenise the teaching and practice of psychology, in much the same way that UniSA is in the process of indigenising all its curricula," Dr Ranzijn said.

"Indigenous voices are being given prominence instead of being excluded as in the past, contributing to more effective practice and enriching Australian society."

At the core of seafood research

UniSA is set to join 27 industry and research partners as a core member of the first Australian Seafood Cooperative Research Centre this month.

The CRC also has 12 supporting partners and includes some of the biggest commercial and research organisations in the Australian seafood scene, representing 90 per cent of the industry’s gross commercial value.

Headquartered in SA, the Seafood CRC is a $135 million industry and government collaboration. UniSA’s Ehrenberg-Bass Institute for Marketing Science, the Nutritional Physiology Research Centre, the Centre for Advanced Manufacturing Research and the Agricultural Machinery Research and Design Centre (within UniSA’s Institute for Sustainable Systems) will be key contributors to the CRC providing expertise in everything from omega-3 and nutritionally enhanced seafood products, to market research and manufacturing technology innovation.
