$30 million boost to environmental research

The Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) for Contamination Assessment and Remediation of the Environment (CARE) has been awarded a $30 million grant  in the Australian Government's 2004 CRC Selection Round, announced in a media release by the Hon Dr Brendan Nelson.

The goal of this CRC is to develop a risk-based approach to remediation leading to improved regulatory acceptance of commercially viable and cost-effective solutions to environmental contamination. The CRC will develop monitoring tools for contaminant groups including heavy metals, petroleum hydrocarbons, industrial solvents and persistent organics. This is an opportunity to make a substantial contribution to science, the environment and the economy, not just in Australia but in the wider global community.

Professor Ravi Naidu, Director of UniSA's Centre for Environmental Risk Assessment and Remediation, is the leader of the CRC CARE and can be contacted for further information on +61 8 830 25041 or 0407 720 257.

Of the 16 CRCs funded in this round, UniSA is the lead site in the above program, a supporting partner in the CRC for Polymers, a core participant in the CRC for Advanced Automative Technology and is involved in the CRC for an Internationally Competitive Pork Industry.
