University wide scholarships for Australian research degree applicants

Successful applicants for these scholarships may be eligible for a top-up scholarship of up to $6,000 per annum (total scholarships stipend equivalent to APAI rate).

Australian Postgraduate Awards (APA)

Funded by the Commonwealth Government's Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR), the award includes a stipend and exemption from the payment of tuition fees for a limited time in the form of a Research Training Scheme (RTS) place.

Eligibility: Available to Australian and New Zealand citizens and permanent residents of Australia.

Value: $20,007 per annum for 3 years (2008 stipend rate). Limited relocation expenses may be reimbursed. A thesis allowance is available.

UniSA Australian Postgraduate Awards (USAPA)

These scholarships are funded by the University of South Australia and with the same conditions as APAs.

Applicants who are not successful in being awarded an APA may be considered for a USAPA. These scholarships are based on the areas of research strength across the University.

The award includes a stipend and exemption from the payment of tuition fees for a limited time (up to 4 years equivalent to undertake a PhD or 2 years equivalent to undertake a Masters by Research).

These scholarships are not transferable to any other institution.

Eligibility: Available to Australian citizens, permanent residents of Australia or New Zealand citizens.

Rural and Isolated Scholarship

This scholarship is funded by the University of South Australia and with the same conditions as the Australian Postgraduate Award (tuition and living allowance scholarship).

The scholarship is available for rural and isolated students. The applicant will need to provide a statement of up to 500 words outlining any special circumstances related to previous or current residency in a rural or regional area within Australia and the consequences of this for their educational access and participation. Selection will be made on merit.

Eligibility: Available to Australian citizens and permanent residents of Australia originally from a rural, regional or isolated area.

Value: $26,669 (2009 rates), plus a one-off establishment grant of $5,000.  Limited relocation expenses may be reimbursed. A thesis allowance is available.

UniSA Indigenous Scholarship

This scholarship is funded by the University of South Australia and with the same conditions as the Australian Postgraduate Award (tuition and living allowance scholarship).

One scholarship is available each year to be awarded to an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander applicant who is applying for entry to UniSA for a research degree.

Eligibility: Available to Australian citizens and permanent residents of Australia.
