UniSA-ANU Vice Chancellors' Summer Research Scholarships for undergraduate students

The University of South Australia is delighted to offer a number of UniSA-ANU Vice Chancellors' Summer Research Scholarships to be taken between mid November and early February. These scholarships are in addition to the vacation summer scholarships offered by UniSA for short-term research at UniSA.

Up to ten UniSA-ANU Vice Chancellors' Summer Research scholarships will be available each year to enable UniSA scholars to spend eight weeks engaging in research at the Australian National University (ANU).

These scholarships are for currently enrolled undergraduate students in UniSA (preferably in the summer prior to their Honours year) with a strong academic track record and completing the third or fourth year of a full-time program leading to an honours degree.  Second years students with an outstanding academic record who are intending to complete an honours degree may also be considered.

UniSA-ANU Vice Chancellors' Summer Research Scholars are expected to undertake supervised research work at ANU. This will enable scholars to gain research experience in a professional setting working alongside international calibre researchers.

As part of the application process, applicants will need to identify three ANU researchers or research teams, in order of preference, who are undertaking work of interest to the applicant.  It is preferable that the Summer Research project to be undertaken is relevant to the research the applicant may undertake in their Honours year. The application form provides the opportunity for applicants to nominate their own research project, however this will be dependent on the research expertise and capacity of the research area. Objectives

The UniSA-ANU Vice Chancellors' Summer Research Scholarships provide high achieving students with hands-on experience of research and an opportunity to learn about the research opportunities available at ANU. This is particularly useful to students considering proceeding to a higher degree by research.

The scholarships provide contact with distinguished researchers, and enable students to use facilities and materials for research that may not be readily available elsewhere. They offer a challenging environment in which students have an opportunity to evaluate for themselves, and demonstrate to others, their potential for research work.

Eligibility

These scholarships are for currently enrolled undergraduate students in UniSA (preferably in the summer prior to their Honours year) with a strong academic track record and completing the third or fourth year of a full-time program leading to an honours degree.

Second years students with an outstanding academic record who are intending to complete an honours degree may also be considered.

Tenure

The period of tenure of an UniSA-ANU Vice Chancellors' Summer Research Scholarship will be eight weeks between mid-November and February of the following year.

To accommodate the Christmas/New Year closure of 1.5 weeks, the period of tenure may be taken in two blocks of time, subject to approval from the supervisory staff. In these instances, Scholars will be responsible for any additional expenses if they choose to remain in Canberra over the break.

Benefits and conditions

The Scholarship provides:

  • Research stipend - $300 per week (normally tax exempt) for 8 weeks
  • Accommodation at ANU's Burgmann College. Accommodation costs of $320 per week will be paid on the student's behalf by UniSA to the college. Approval may be given for the payment of an ad hoc allowance in lieu of college accommodation in special cases.
  • Travel expenses - return airfare, car or rail travel of up to $1,000.

It is the successful applicants' responsibility to make their own travel arrangements. A copy of the proposed itinerary and budget will be required as part of the application process. Air and rail travel should be made at student concession rates. If a scholar is intending to return to Adelaide for the Christmas/New Year period, the travel allowance may be used for this purpose, provided an itinerary is included as part of the application.
Note:
students should not pay for travel bookings before scholarship application outcomes are known.
