High achiever scholarships - overseas opportunities

A range of prestigious scholarships are available to postgraduate students who have excelled in their studies.

These scholarships provide opportunities to undertake graduate study in overseas institutes or universities. Consider the requirements now to become eligible to apply.

international applicantAustralian applicantsAnne Wexler Australian-American Studies Scholarship in Public Policy

The Anne Wexler Australian-American Studies Scholarship in Public Policy aims to grow Australian-American educational linkages by building the network of public policy experts and to encourage ongoing policy exchange between both countries. The scholarship will enable Australian and US postgraduate students with strong academic credentials and leadership potential to undertake a Master's degree in Australia or the United States in an area that supports Anne Wexler's bi-national interests in the field of public policy. These may include key areas such as health, sustainability, energy, climate change, regional security, political science, history or governmental relations.

Two Wexler Scholarships will be awarded annually. One for an Australian citizen to enrol in a US Masters degree program in Public Policy and one for an American (US) citizen to enrol in an Australian Masters program in Public Policy.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be Australian citizens by birth or naturalisation and reside in Australia at the time of submitting an application. Evidence of citizenship must be supplied with the applications (eg birth certificates or biodata page of passport).
    OR
  • Applicants must be US citizens by birth or naturalisation and reside in the US at the time of submitting an application. Evidence of citizenship must be supplied with the applications (eg birth certificates or biodata page of passport).

Value

The scholarships will be awarded for a maximum two-year period and be valued at up to A$140,000 each. Consideration will be given to those undertaking one year of study to complete a Master's degree. Benefits include:

  • Annual stipend of up to A$30,000 for a maximum of two years
  • Tuition fees of up to A$25,000 per year for a maximum of two years
  • Travel allowance of A$5,000 for return travel
  • Establishment allowance of A$6,000
  • Insurance A$4,000

Australian candidatesCambridge Australia Scholarships

In collaboration with the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust, Cambridge Australia Scholarships awards up to ten PhD scholarships and a number of Masters degree half-scholarships each year.

Successful Cambridge Australia scholars, once they have completed their degrees at Cambridge, are known as Fellows of the Cambridge Commonwealth Society. This international network of scholars and Cambridge alumni encompasses all countries supported by the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust.

These scholarships are awarded to Australian graduates of outstanding academic merit to study at the University of Cambridge. More information and how to apply

Australian candidatesChurchill Fellowships

A Churchill Fellowship is the award of an opportunity through the provision of financial support, to enable Australian citizens from all walks of life to travel overseas to undertake an analysis, study or investigation of a project or an issue that cannot be readily undertaken in Australia. Currently the average Fellowship cost is $25,000.

Australian citizens over the age of 18 are eligible to apply for a Churchill Fellowship. Applicants must be able to complete a minimum of 4 weeks overseas travel to complete their research.

Australian candidatesFulbright Scholarships

The Australian-American Fulbright Commission promotes and supports educational and cultural exchange between Australia and America. Valued at up to $A45,000, the Fulbright Awards are open to Australian citizens to undertake research or study in the United States.

Postgraduate Scholarships

For study or research (8-12 months) towards an American degree or research related to an Australian degree. Up to eleven Fulbright Postgraduate Scholarships are offered in all fields of study, including the following specific awards:

Current Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) holders are encouraged to apply, as APA guidelines have been recently changed to encourage international research experiences related to Australian postgraduate studies through awards, such as Fulbright.

Australian studentsInternational Fulbright Science & Technology PhD Scholarship

The US Government's most prestigious and valuable education scholarships, International Fulbright Science and Technology Awards, for promising graduate students to undertake PhD study at top US universities in fields of science, technology or engineering are now open.

Approximately 40 scholarships are offered each year to graduate students from around the world who demonstrate unique aptitude and innovation in scientific fields, leadership potential and the ability to be a cultural ambassador for their country. Candidates are nominated by their home country's Fulbright commission and selected by rigorous international competition.

Scholarships cover full tuition and stipend for three years of PhD study in the US, plus a return airfare to the US and allowances for books and equipment, research and professional conferences.

Value

The total value of the award is estimated at up to A $300,000. Scholars' host universities are expected to cover the remaining expenses toward completion of the degree.

Australian candidateJohn Crampton Travelling Scholarship

The John Crampton Travelling Scholarship enables students of Architecture, Engineering, Fine Arts and/or Classical Antiquity to undertake study overseas in Italy, Germany, Spain, Greece or any other country considered appropriate by the Scholarship trustee, Executor Trustee Australia Limited ('Executor Trustee').

Eligibility

A candidate should preferably be an Australian citizen or permanent resident and a graduate of an Australian university holding either a First Class Honours degree (or equivalent qualification) or a research masters degree. Any other candidate who is a student in any of the areas of study mentioned in paragraph 2 of the Rules may be considered on merit.

Australian candidateRhodes Scholarship

Applications for the South Australian Rhodes Scholarships are invited annually.  The successful applicant(s) will take up their position at Oxford in or around September.

Cecil Rhodes listed in that section of his Will in which he attempted to define the type of Scholar he was seeking: Literary and scholastic attainment; fondness of and success in outdoor sports; qualities of truth, courage, devotion to duty, sympathy for and protection of the weak, kindliness, unselfishness and fellowship; exhibition of moral force of character and instincts to lead and take an interest in one's contemporaries. The Will also directs that 'no student shall be qualified or disqualified for election to a Scholarship on account of race or religious opinions'.

Australian candidateThe General Sir John Monash Awards

Annually, up to eight Awards may be awarded to outstanding Australian citizens graduating from Australian Universities to enable them to undertake postgraduate study abroad at the world's best Universities, appropriate to their field of study.

The General Sir John Monash Awards are not limited by age, gender, and academic field of study, country or university, subject to the university being considered to be amongst the global leaders in the chosen field of study. However, whilst no upper age limit is stipulated, Awards will generally favour those whose major contribution to their field and to the community lies ahead of them.
