The National Library of Australia offers annual Summer Scholarships to tertiary students. These scholarships are made possible through the generosity of the family of the late Norman McCann (a former National Library Council Member), and of John and Heather Seymour.
The summer scholarships were established to support younger scholars undertaking any research which can be supported by the Library's collections.
The scholarships are tenable for a period of six weeks commencing on the first working day of January each year. The Scholarship provides support for the early stages of a research project. Scholars have privileged access to the Library's materials and facilities, as well as sustained interaction with many of its staff.
The scholarships are open to tertiary students who have commenced postgraduate study and are under the age of thirty at 31 December in the year of their application.
Applicants must be Australian citizens or have permanent residence. Preference will be given to applicants who would otherwise find it difficult to use the Library's collections for reasons such as geographic distance from Canberra.
Scholarship holders will receive an honorarium of $300 per week plus twin share accommodation with breakfast included, at University House at the ANU for the six-week duration of the scholarship. A return economy class air fare from the scholarship holder's home within Australia will also be provided.
Summer scholars are expected to write a short report and to give a presentation on their research achievement and experience at the Library. The scholarship holder will be encouraged to write a short article on their research suitable for publication in National Library of Australia News. The summer scholar will also be asked to deposit a copy of their thesis, other publication or subsequent research outcome arising from their scholarship with the Library.
Applications close on 30 September 2009. No late applications will be considered. Application results will be notified by early December 2009.
