Maurice de Rohan International Scholarship

The University of South Australia has established the Maurice de Rohan International Scholarship to be awarded to an Australian citizen studying for a doctoral degree at UniSA valued at up to $15,000 plus a travel grant of $2,500 to cover airfares for travel to the United Kingdom or United States of America.

Background
As a distinguished Honorary Doctor and Alumni of the University, this scholarship is in memory of Maurice de Rohan and his significant contribution to furthering education, both in Adelaide and the United Kingdom. Mr de Rohan was awarded an Order of Australia in London in October 2006 in recognition of his role as Agent-General in London for eight years and for his work as an ambassador for both Adelaide and Australia. Purpose
The purpose of the Maurice de Rohan International Scholarship is to provide the opportunity for higher degree by research (HDR) students to gain an international perspective and improve their thesis by having the opportunity to undertake research, data collection or work with institutional or industry partners in the United Kingdom or United States of America.
Whilst overseas, the awardee will be expected to be a Maurice de Rohan International Scholar and Ambassador for UniSA and South Australia and build research relationships with academics at the UK institution.
The International Scholarship will provide funding towards:
- gaining industry or academic experience at institutions with which UniSA has an agreement
- overseas field trips for the purpose of data collection
- a stipend to assist with living expenses.
Travel to conferences to present a refereed conference paper may also
be included.
Eligibility
The scholarship is only available to Australian citizens who are undertaking an HDR program at the University of South Australia.
The applicant must be making satisfactory progress and:
- be currently enrolled at UniSA for a doctoral degree and normally be in his/her second or early third year of candidacy (or an equivalent period part-time), or be in the process of upgrading from a Masters by Research Degree to a doctoral degree
- ensure s/he has completed and had his/her research proposal accepted and have the appropriate ethics and/or safety clearances
- provide evidence of the manner in which the research and thesis will be enhanced by the visit overseas
- have clearly demonstrated the capacity for independent research
- have gained unqualified support from the Supervisor and Research Degree Coordinator for the proposed overseas visit
- provide confirmation from the overseas institution that arrangements have been finalised or are in the process of being finalised
- indicate how contact will be maintained with the Supervisor and the University whilst overseas, or through supervision at a partner UK or USA institution
- be likely to complete their degree within the required
timeframe.
Funding and payment
Applicants will need to provide a budget to indicate the cost of the travel and living expenses.
The total value of the Maurice de Rohan International Scholarship will be up to AUD$15,000 towards travel and living expenses for a maximum period of 4 to 6 months, plus a travel grant of AUD$2,500 to cover airfares to the UK or USA.
Payment will normally be paid in two portions in Australian dollars only:
- the travel grant of $2,500 and 50% of the scholarship budget upfront
- the remainder subject to satisfactory progress.
Selection
Selection will be based on:
- meeting eligibility criteria
- high academic achievement (publications, seminar and conference presentations)
- the content of the application and interview process
- the financial resources available to the applicant
- the supporting statement of the Supervisor and Research Degree Coordinator, and comments from the Dean: Research (or equivalent)
- the UK or USA institution where the candidate will be researching.
The successful applicants will be shortlisted for an interview. Applicants will need to demonstrate the
ability to be the Maurice de Rohan International Scholar and be an
ambassador for the University.
Conditions
- The University reserves the right not to award the scholarship.
- Normally the applicant is not precluded from holding other scholarships/grants.
- In any publications, acknowledgement of the Maurice de Rohan International Scholarship is to be made.
Travel arrangements will be made via the University's preferred travel provider.
HDR students cannot use the length of time spent overseas as a reason for either a scholarship or candidacy extension.
The decision of the Selection Panel is final and no correspondence
will be entered into.

Visa and insurance
HDR students must arrange their own health and personal travel insurance and appropriate visas.
Normally HDR students travelling on University approved business as part of their degree are covered for Professional Indemnity, Public Liability, Personal Accident and Travel.

Travel and health
HDR students must arrange their own travel, personal insurance and appropriate visas.
Students must also ensure that they take account of health warnings
in the country of travel and arrange their own vaccinations.
Security
The successful applicant must:
- comply with the University's Travel Policies and Procedures
- ensure their own safety in the visiting country by reference to
the Australian Government's Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade
travel advisories.
Reporting requirements
The Maurice de Rohan International Scholar must
provide a brief report describing the work undertaken to the Pro Vice
Chancellor and Vice President (International and Development) and (Research and
Innovation) on his/her return to UniSA, through the Dean of Graduate
Studies.
