The
Ian Wark Research Institute
(The Wark™), at the University of South Australia, is the Australian
Research Council Special Research Centre for Particle and Material
Interfaces. With 130 staff and postgraduate students, it is recognised
internationally as one of Australia’s premier research facilities and a
world leader in particle and material interfaces. It is a significant
contributor to the ongoing wealth and success of the minerals and other
industries in Australia and globally. The Wark conducts its research
across four sectors – Mineral Processing, Colloids and Nanostructures,
Materials and Environmental Surface Science, and Bio and Polymer
Interfaces. The Wark is also a National Centre for Nano and
Bio-materials, funded under the Federal Government’s International
Science Linkages Program, part of ‘Backing Australia’s Ability II’. It
is now the headquarters of the Australian Mineral Science Research
Institute, a virtual institute embracing outstanding research teams at
the University of South Australia, the University of Melbourne, the
University of Newcastle, and the University of Queensland. The Wark has
an outstanding reputation in fundamental and applied research and
development programs, postgraduate education and technology transfer
courses, as well as specialist consulting and testing.
A number of postgraduate research scholarships are available to Australian and overseas citizens to undertake state of the art research in materials science and engineering. Outcomes will add to fundamental scientific understanding, and will have direct application in industry. Applicants should have an Honours degree, or equivalent experience, in chemistry, physics, chemical engineering, materials science, metallurgy, metallurgical engineering, or a related field. The successful candidates will be exposed to a vibrant research team environment and will be trained in cutting edge scientific techniques. To be undertaken at University of South Australia.
