Establishing a new higher degree by research (HDR) scholarship

A practical resource for external funding bodies and supervisors who want to set up a scholarship for higher degree by research (HDR) students.

How to set up a scholarship

An HDR scholarship can be set up in two ways depending on the source of funding:

  1. Scholarship funds are sourced from an external funding body for the purpose of a named scholarship
  2. Scholarship funds are sourced internally (eg from school funds, APAI or project funds).

1. Externally funded scholarships

When scholarship funds are sourced externally an agreement between the University of South Australia and the external funding body needs to be in place before an offer of scholarship can be made.

If you represent an external organisation and you would like to establish a HDR scholarship, the first step in this process is to complete the Proposal to establish an externally funded scholarship for HDR candidates form (RTF file). Once complete it forms the basis for negotiations to establish an agreement. Please refer to the guidelines (RTF file) when completing the form. Once the agreement has been signed off by all parties and funding secured, the scholarship can be advertised. When a suitable candidate has been identified the New scholarship offers form (RTF file) should be completed by the Cost Centre Manager where funds are held.

2. Internally funded scholarships (includes APAI and school funded)

When scholarships are funded from internal sources a New scholarship offers form (RTF file) should be completed when the recipient of the award has been identified. The main requirement of this form is that a cost centre is established and the scholarship is authorised by the cost centre manager. If the recipient has not yet been identified and you would like to advertise the scholarship please complete the Advertising a HDR scholarship form (see below).

Advertising the scholarship

The Graduate Studies Office can coordinate advertising on the University HDR Scholarships website and JASON (Joint Academic Scholarship Online Network) if required.

JASON is a program developed jointly by a number of universities. It aims to enable students wishing to pursue postgraduate studies (either within Australia or internationally) to gain access to current information regarding funding opportunities through various scholarship programs run through universities, charitable foundations, government and private institutions.

Please complete the 'Advertising a HDR Scholarship' form - RTF file (pc) and Word file (mac) - and return to:
