Completion Scholarships

International candidatesAustralian candidateUniSA Completion Scholarships are designed to enable Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students in the final stages of writing their thesis to spend uninterrupted time (up to six months) to complete the thesis. 

 


Purpose

Completion scholarships provide funding of up to six months living allowance *. They are directed primarily towards HDR students who are enrolled non-traditionally, for example candidates undertaking a PhD part-time. 

Generally, the panel will not consider applications from HDR students who have held a scholarship such as an APA, APA(I), USAPA, President’s or Division, Institute or School scholarship. Only if there are exceptional or extenuating circumstances, will consideration be given to allocating completion scholarships to prior scholarship holders.

* As an alternative to a living allowance, international students may prefer to have their tuition fees paid for one semester.

Up to a maximum of six months. Preference may be given to applications for periods of less than six months.

Stipend paid at the Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) rate.

Scholarships are tax-free.

How to apply

Applications should not be more than two pages, plus a proposed work plan. The plan is to address how the thesis will be completed within no more than six months of commencement of the scholarship.

Applicants must obtain the support of the Principal Supervisor (or Associate Supervisor) to the application.

The application is also to include an objective report of progress by the Research Degree Coordinator. 

The completed application is to be forwarded by the Research Degree Coordinator to the Divisional Dean for a recommendation.

The Divisional Dean will forward completed applications, with recommendations, to the Dean of Graduate Studies, who will have a panel to assist in selecting successful candidates.

Successful applicants will be required to enrol, and remain enrolled on a full-time basis at UniSA.

Leave of absence will not be available during the duration of the Completion Scholarship, unless there are exceptional circumstances.

During the write-up scholarship, progress will be monitored on a regular basis, in accordance with milestones outlined in the work plan (see the application form).

Failure to make satisfactory progress in line with the above milestones may mean the cessation of the scholarship payments.

Submission of the thesis for examination, with Supervisor’s approval, is required at the completion of the scholarship.

Closing date

Round 1 applications will close on 14 March
Round 2 applications will close on 15 August

Applicants will be advised of their success or otherwise.

General information

These scholarships are expected to be highly competitive, and there are limited numbers available. 

Scholarship payments will be made fortnightly in arrears. 

Successful applicants will need to complete a Claim for Living Allowance. Only the Supervisor’s signature is required.
