Two
Australian Postgraduate Scholarships Awards (Industry) are available
from late 2009 in the
Institute for Telecommunications Research (ITR) at the
University of South Australia to support a PhD in Satellite
Communications.
The remote, distributed location of many of Australia's primary industries preclude the use of consumer-oriented terrestrial wireless broadband services. In many instances, satellite communications provides the only feasible means of connectivity for telemetry, supervisory control and data acquisition, tracking and fleet management. Meteorology, remote sensing, irrigation, mining, oil and gas exploration, and fisheries are just a few examples of high-value applications of particular significance to Australia.
This project will develop bandwidth efficient satellite communications technologies that greatly reduce cost and pave the way toward new market opportunities for broadband access and telemetry applications. It also aims to extend both basic understanding and engineering practice for satellite modems. Project outcomes will include fundamental contributions to the theory of information transmission, new coding and decoding methods for satellite communications and a proof-of-concept implementation demonstrating benefits in real-world conditions.
The candidate will receive a tax-free scholarship of $26,669 tax free per annum (2009 rate).
