A
postgraduate scholarship is available in the
Ian Wark Research Institute at the
University of South Australia to pursue a PhD in the exciting
multidisciplinary and important areas of physical
chemistry and resource engineering.
Environmentally benign flotation chemicals is a large international research project involving funding from polymer manufacturers, mineral companies, and the Australian Research Council. The aim of the project is to replace currently used hazardous flotation chemicals with those that have lower impact on human health and the environment. Benign flotation chemicals, ie biodegradable polysaccharide polymers, will be developed and tested for specific mineral separations. The underlying methodology of the project is based on state-of-the-art techniques of surface and colloid science (atomic force microscopy and the quartz crystal microbalance) alongside industry standard tests to study the adsorption of polymers and the performance of polymers in flotation. The successful applicant will be exposed to a vibrant research team environment and will have the opportunity to interact with national and international sponsor companies. The educational experience gained in this project will provide the successful applicant with the skills needed to work in any environment (industry or academia) where surfaces and interfaces are important.
The candidate will receive a tax-free scholarship of $26,669 tax free per annum (2009 rate).
Physical chemistry; resource engineering
