Scholarship to China
Mr
Yalei Hao, a Reservoir Engineering graduate student now studying in the
School of Computer and
Information Science, University of South Australia, will be
undertaking research at the Computation Institute of the Chinese Academy
of Science, in Beijing, China, on the applications of suitable data
mining technology, especially in oil and gas exploration and
exploitation. He is the recipient of an
Endeavour Australia Cheung Kong Award. 'Petroleum resources
are always part of the needs and interest between China and Australia. I
wish to make a contribution to that,' he said. He will be in China for
six months from the end of June 2005.
In his recommendation letter, Professor Markus Stumptner said of Mr Hao that he 'has shown outstanding ability to connect with international researchers to further his research goals and provide additional insight that would not available from thesis work conducted in isolation. This included not just researchers in China but also in Germany. However, his ability to successfully interact with research groups in China towards the benefit for both sides has been nothing short of awesome.'
As a result of Mr Hao's work, multiple international collaborations with very high quality institutions (including the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Key Lab of Intelligent Information Processing, and Tsinghua University) have been established, including the project Application of Data Mining in Oil and Gas Exploration and Exploitation Engineering funded under the Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST) International Scientific Linkage Programme.
Mr.Hao’s research programme is a clearly defined, integral part of his PhD work, which exactly fits the requirements set out in the Endeavour Cheung Kong guidelines.
