Applicants for Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Masters by Research programs must contact an academic staff member who is prepared to supervise the research project. Please contact the relevant research degree coordinator if you are unsure about who would be appropriate.
Search for a principal supervisor
One of the most important steps you will take as an applicant is to find an academic staff member willing to supervise your research. A principal supervisor is the person a higher degree by research (HDR) student will have the most contact with during their candidature, responsible for overseeing the research project and monitoring progress.
- Search for a principal supervisor (Directory of Research Expertise)
Please note: an academic staff member agreeing to supervise your research is no guarantee that your application will be successful.
Find a research topic
In the application form, you will be required to answer some questions about your proposed research. Assistance may be provided by academic staff. Some research topics may be available on projects being undertaken by academic staff in their school or institute.
