Graduate Certificate in Research Commercialisation (GCRC)

Background

Research management, innovation and commercialisation are key skills for researchers of the next generation. The Commonwealth Government provides a scholarship to support research commercialisation training for a limited number of domestic Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students.

The objective of the Commercialisation Training Scheme (CTS) is to provide high quality research commercialisation training for the next generation of Australian researchers as a means of equipping them with the skills, knowledge and experience necessary to bring research-based ideas, inventions and innovations to market.

This award, designed to meet the requirements of the CTS scheme, has been developed by the Australian Technology Network partners: the University of South Australia, Curtin University of Technology, RMIT, the Queensland University of Technology and the University of Technology, Sydney.

The Graduate Certificate is conducted online, via the ATN e-Grad School, with the partner universities sharing the delivery of units.

Students may be granted special leave from their higher degree by research to undertake the Graduate Certificate in Research Commercialisation (GCRC) on a full-time or part-time basis. A living allowance may also be available.

The program is designed for those who are planning for research careers in one or more capacities - conducting funded research projects, leading a team of researchers, preparing research grant applications, supervising students undertaking higher degrees by research, providing organisational support for funded research projects, and those contributing to broader strategic and policy initiatives relating to research and particularly its commercialisation.

Commercialisation Training Scheme Scholarships

Australian studentsThe DEEWR funded Commercialisation Training Scheme (CTS) offers a limited number of scholarships to domestic HDR students, covering tuition fees and a living allowance. Guidelines and conditions (RTF file)

To be eligible to receive benefit under the CTS, a student must:

Financial assistance may continue for students currently on Australian Postgraduate Awards, UniSA Postgraduate Awards or Australian Postgraduate Awards (Industry) who are accepted to undertake the Graduate Certificate on either a full or part-time basis.

For current HDR students who wish to undertake the Graduate Certificate on a full-time basis, with leave from their higher degree by research, the CTS scholarship covers the tuition fee and a living allowance, which is payable for six months at the current APA(I) rate ($26,669 per annum) on a pro rata basis for 14 weeks. Alternatively, a part-time stipend is available for students who undertake the GCRC part-time with part-time concurrent enrolment in their higher degree by research (completing the GCRC in 12 months and continuing with their research).

Prospective GCRC students should consult the Manager, Research Education & Training (tel: 8302 3956, email: Michelle.Sced@unisa.edu.au) to ascertain the availability and duration of Commercialisation Training Scheme (CTS) places.

Selection criteria and application form

Selection for CTS places and scholarships is competitive, based on academic merit and the probability of pursuing a career that will use the skills, knowledge and experience gained during CTS training.

Current domestic HDR students

Complete the application form (RTF file), and submit a written statement (of no more than two pages) providing the following information:

Outline of career goals and how these would use the skills, knowledge and experience gained during CTS training
Clear statement of the relevance of research topic to commercialisation training
Brief overview of relevant experience in commercialisation and/or related fields
Revised research timeline for completion of the thesis including Graduate Certificate studies, to ensure that undertaking CTS training does not unduly delay the completion of the thesis or the quality of HDR publications
Supporting statement from the supervisor outlining how the CTS training would be of significant value to the student's career goals and would neither unduly hinder student's HDR progress nor compromise the quality of the outputs of the HDR student (it is the student's responsibility to obtain this statement)

Other applicants

Complete the online application and forward the written statement (see above) to the Manager, Research Education & Training by email: research.degrees@unisa.edu.au
