The use of animals in science: ethical and practical considerations
When: Thursday 5 March 2009 from 9.00am until 4.00pm
Where: National Wine Centre of Australia, Corner of Botanic and
Hackney Roads, Adelaide
The Animal Ethics Committees of the University of Adelaide and the Institute
of Medical and Veterinary Science jointly conducted a one-day course for
staff and honours/postgraduate students, including those at other institutions. The annual course is particularly aimed at new users but is of interest and
value to animal users generally. The broad object of the day's program is to
draw attention to some of the ethical questions that must be considered when
scientific and teaching activities relating to the conditional use of animals is
proposed. There is particular emphasis on the responsibilities involved and on
the importance of compliance with the
Australian
code of practice for the care and use of animals for scientific
purposes (PDF file, 469kb).
In addition the program raises wider issues in relation to the humane use of
animals.

The Canadian Council on Animal Care and
Australia
In recognition of the 50th anniversary of the 3Rs (Replacement, Reduction & Refinement), The Canadian Council on Animal Care and Australia (ANZCCART) hosted a public seminar to be given by Dr Clement Gauthier, Executive Director of the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC).
As the original version Australian Code of Practice for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes was initially based on the equivalent document prepared by the CCAC, there has been an interesting co-evolution between our regulatory systems. Dr Gauthier visited ANZCCART during January 2009 and agreed to give this public lecture here in Adelaide.
Event hosted on Friday 30 January 2009 at 4.00pm
