Research prizes and awards calendar 2008

The following calendar gives a yearly overview of the major research prizes and awards rounds. Where possible, actual closing dates and links to the relevant website are provided.

For additional awards you can search the SPIN database service. Access to this database is available from any computer on the University network. If you need any assistance using SPIN, please contact the Grants and Fellowships section of Research Capacity and Compliance.

Please note:  To review and send applications, the Research Capacity and Compliance Section requires draft applications at least 14 days before the prize and award body's closing date, unless otherwise specified.

AMGEN Medical Researcher Award Recognises excellence in medical research by a postdoctoral person for translational studies in Australia. Offered by Amgen Australia Pty Ltd 24 April

Fresh Science A national competition that identifies new and interesting research being done by early-career scientists around the country. The stories are released to the media before, during and after National Science Week in August 1 May

Prime Minister's Prizes for Science (overview) National tribute to excellent and dedicated work in Australian science and science teaching Outstanding achievement in science that advances, or has the potential to advance, human welfare or benefits society 9 May
South Australian Science Excellence Awards Aim to raise the awareness of the importance of science, technology and innovation amongst the broader community, as well as recognise and reward excellence in science research, education and communication. 9 May

The Young Tall Poppy Science Awards Recognise the achievements of outstanding young researchers in the sciences working in universities, research laboratories and private industry, private practice and government organisations 6 June
Ramaciotti Medal for Excellence in Biomedical Research Outstanding discovery (or discoveries) in clinical or experimental biomedical research that has had an important impact on biomedical science, clinical medicine, or the way in which health care is delivered 30 June
ATSE Clunies Ross Award Important contributions to science and its applications for the economic, social or environmental benefit of Australia 30 June

Nature awards for mentoring in science - Australasia Nature awards will recognise excellence in mentoring in Australasian science Germany only

Business/Higher Education Round Table Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Collaboration in Research & Development and Education & Training 30 August
The General Sir John Monash Awards Annually up to eight awards may be made to outstanding Australian citizens graduating from Australian Universities to enable them to undertake postgraduate study abroad at the world’s best universities, appropriate to their field of study 31 August 
Fenner Medal The Fenner Medal recognises distinguished research in biology (excluding the biomedical sciences) by scientists under 40 years 30 August (call for nominations June)
Gottschalk Medal The Gottschalk medal recognises outstanding research in the medical sciences by scientists under 40 years 30 August (call for nominations June)
R J W Le Fèvre Memorial Prize The R.J.W. Le Fèvre Memorial Prize is to recognise outstanding basic research in chemistry by scientists under 40 years 30 August (call for nominations June)
Pawsey Medal The Pawsey Medal recognises outstanding research in physics by scientists under 40 years 30 August (call for nominations June)
David Craig Medal The David Craig Medal recognises contributions of a high order to any branch of chemistry by active researchers 30 August (call for nominations June)
Haddon Forrester King Medal The Haddon King Medal recognises original and sustained contributions to earth and related sciences Call for nominations June 2008
Hannan Medal The Hannan Medal recognises one of three areas in turn at two-yearly intervals - pure mathematics; applied and computational mathematics and statistical science Call for nominations June 2008
Lyle Medal The Lyle Medal recognises outstanding achievement by a scientist in Australia for research in mathematics or physics Call for nominations June 2008
Frederick White Prize Recognises the achievements of scientists in Australia engaged in research of intrinsic scientific merit which has an actual or potential contribution to community interests, to rural or industrial progress or to the understanding of natural phenomena 30 August (call for nominations June)
Moran Medal Recognises outstanding research by scientists under 40 years in one or more of the fields of applied probability, biometrics, mathematical genetics, psychometrics and statistics Call for nominations June 2008
Dorothy Hill Award Supports research in the earth sciences including reef science, ocean drilling, marine science and taxonomy in marine systems, by female researchers under 40 years 30 August (call for nominations June)
Ian Wark Medal and Lecture Recognises contributions to the prosperity of Australia where such prosperity is attained through the advancement of scientific knowledge or its application, or both 30 August (call for nominations June)
Jaeger Medal The award is made to a scientist for investigations of a high order into the solid Earth or its oceans carried out in Australia or having some connection with Australian Earth science Call for nominations June 2008
Anton Hales Medal Recognises distinguished research in the earth sciences. It will be awarded to researchers under 40 years at the closing date, except in the case of significant interruptions to a research career. The award is restricted to candidates who are normally resident in Australia and for research conducted mainly in Australia. 30 August

Australian Institute of Nuclear Science and Engineering (AINSE) Awards To enable researchers to gain access to AINSE Supported Facilities, and to meet costs associated with their use, including travel to and from the facility 15 September
Global Development Awards and Medals Competition Award for Most Innovative Development Project - Economics, Political Science, Sociology etc 5 September for research proposals/papers
Kistler Prize Significant contributions to the understanding of the connection between the human genome and human society 30 September
ASMR Research Awards Support a postgraduate student member of the Australian Society for Medical Research (ASMR) nearing completion of their studies or a recently graduated postdoctoral member to undertake a short period of research in a laboratory outside of Australia or in a distal laboratory within Australia. 30 September
Award for research on the conservation of endangered Australian vertebrate species Support for research on endangered Australian vertebrate species (endangered either locally or nationally) TBA
Research conferences and Travelling fellowships (Australian Academy of Science Research Conferences) For active research workers in rapidly advancing fields to discuss current advances and problems TBA

GlaxoSmithKline Australia Award for Research Excellence Research leading to important or potential benefit to human health 1 October each year
Millennium Technology Prize Groundbreaking innovation that promotes people's quality of life, contributes towards the realisation of humane values and encourages sustainable development 31 October each year (call for nominations in April)

Heart Foundation Research Medal Outstanding individual contribution to the fields of heart, stroke and blood vessel disease research in Australia over a sustained period. 21 November
Dan David Prize For achievements having an outstanding scientific, technological, cultural or social impact on our world 30 November
