Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA)
On 26 February 2008, Senator the Hon Kim Carr, Minister for the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research (DIISR), announced the Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) initiative. This initiative will replace the Research Quality Framework exercise. On 4 June 2008 the Minister released a Consultation Paper outlining some details of ERA and posing a number of questions requiring feedback from the sector. The University's response is being coordinated by REQUIEM - see further details below.

Pilot Submission Guidelines
The ERA Pilot Submission Guidelines (PDF file, 239kb) were released on 1 October 2008. The Guidelines will be used for a Pilot of the ERA system.
Accompanying the ERA Pilot Submission Guidelines is the SEER Technical Specifications (ZIP file). The Specifications include information about data content and structures required for packaging ERA Pilot submissions; system interfaces; mechanisms of data transfer; and pilot system environment availability and support procedures.
Draft Pilot Guidelines
The Draft Pilot Submission Guidelines (PDF file, 308kb) were released on 22 August 2008. The purpose of these guidelines was to 'provide an overview of, and specify the content and data requirements for, submissions to the ERA Pilot.'
Consultation Paper
The University of South Australia's response to this consultation paper will be developed by REQUIEM.

Journal Ranking Consultation
The ERA initiative will use a range of indicators and other proxies to support the evaluation of research excellence. One of these indicators is discipline-specific tiered outlet rankings. The Australian Research Council (ARC) is seeking feedback from the sector to assist with the development of research journal rankings, a subset of tiered outlet rankings. This is the second phase of consultation and is primarily to canvass the views of higher education providers (HEPs).
Internal submissions closed COB Thursday 31 July 2008. Research and Innovation Services Office will compile comments for review by Research Quality, Innovation and Engagement Metrics Working Group (REQUIEM). UniSA's response will then be submitted by the Deputy Vice Chancellor and Vice President: Research and Innovation. Submissions to the ARC are due by 14 August 2008.

Australian Research Council response
On 24 April 2008, the Australian Research Council (ARC) launched the Research Excellence website. This website contains relevant and up-to-date information about the ERA initiative, including Australian and New Zealand Standard Research Classification (ANZSRC), ERA presentations, FAQs, media releases and metrics.
