Painting physics

I chose to do my PhD at UniSA because, having completed my Bachelors degree here, I was already familiar with the people and the facilities. I also knew who my supervisor would be so I was pleased with that. The other plus was that I maintained studio practice. Though it wasn’t part of the program, it meant I could maintain a profile as an exhibiting artist.

My thesis was called The Aesthetics of the Sublime in 20th century physics. I was arguing that issues of representations in physics are more easily confronted with aesthetics. For example, we have no idea what a quark looks like; we can only think about them in terms of mathematics. I applied aesthetics theory to the way we talk about physics. My painting was a good contrast to working on my thesis, which was all theory. The balance actually made it quite enjoyable. I also enjoyed the contacts, the networking and engaging in excellence. There are some really good people in the School of Art.
