Under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1985, the University of South Australia is licensed to use animals in teaching, research and experimentation. Under the terms of this licence the Institute of Medical and Veterinary Science (IMVS) Animal Ethics Committee approves procedures for teaching (including display), research and experimentation. The acquisition and use of animals for teaching (including display), research or experimentation must not commence before approval has been granted by the IMVS Animal Ethics Committee. All persons using animals must also have an IMVS Animal Users Permit (renewed annually, July-June).
Members of the University of South Australia undertaking research involving animal experimentation are required to abide by the procedures approved by the Institute of Medical and Veterinary Science Animal Ethics Committee.
1. Animal Ethics Liaison Committee
The Animal Ethics Liaison Committee has been established as a committee to report to Research Integrity, Accountability and Compliance Committee.
1.1 Composition
Membership will comprise a maximum of six people nominated by the Deputy Vice Chancellor and Vice President (Research & Innovation) - covering areas that undertake research involving animals and from areas where animal houses are located. Members are appointed for three years.
1.2 Terms of Reference
(1) To liaise with IMVS Animal Ethics Committee on behalf of USA activities involving animals.
(2) Adhere to current guidelines provided by IMVS Animal Ethics Committee.
(3) Take into account any related University procedures and policies.
(4) To report regularly to the Research Integrity, Accountability and Compliance Committee.
