Policy

1. Any person, not being a member of the University staff, who makes regular, significant contributions to the teaching, research or scholarship of the University shall be eligible for conferment of an honorary academic title.

2. The titles available for conferral shall be:

Professor, Associate Professor, Senior Lecturer, Lecturer, Research Professor, Research Associate Professor, Senior Research Fellow, Research Fellow and Associate prefixed by one of the following designations, as appropriate:

Visiting - denotes an academic from another institution working in the University;

Adjunct - denotes a person, not being a member of the University staff, who makes regular, significant contributions to the teaching, research or scholarship of the University; Adjuncts may be previous members of staff, industry and international collaborators, or staff from other institutions   This includes Clinical Adjuncts who contribute to the teaching of the University through the supervision of placements or teaching in clinical work.  This subset of Adjuncts will have the title prefix 'Adjunct Clinical'.

3. The level of academic title shall be dependent on the nature of the contribution to the University and on the criteria applicable to the level of appointment of academic staff by the University. Any visitor who holds a full professorship at a recognised University normally will be granted Visiting Professor status.

4. An Adjunct who supervises research students must be admitted as a member of the Register of Research Degree Supervisors as required in Policy RES8.1.

5. The appointment of an Adjunct will only be enacted upon the signing of the University's standard Adjunct Relationship Deed.

 

Procedure

1. A nomination for the award of an honorary academic title at Associate Professor level or above may be initiated by a member of the Senior Management Group or by a Director: Research Institute and submitted to the Vice Chancellor. The nomination shall be in writing accompanied by information in support of the nomination. The nomination will be considered by a Senior Honorary Titles Committee comprising:

Vice Chancellor or nominee (Chair)
Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic)
Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research and Innovation)
Chair, Academic Board

which, if the proposal is supported, will approve the title and report to Council.

2. A nomination for the award of any other honorary academic title may be initiated by a Divisional Pro Vice Chancellor, Director Research Institute, or a Head of School. The nomination shall be in writing accompanied by information in support of the nomination.

The proposal may then be approved by the Divisional or Portfolio Pro Vice Chancellor. The Pro Vice Chancellor or Research Institute Director or nominee will notify the recipient of the title in writing.

3. A title normally shall be awarded for the period of the visit or association or for a period not exceeding three years, which ever is the lesser. Reviews are to be conducted annually by the relevant Head of School or Director Research Institute. The relevant Honorary Titles Committee may receive a proposal for the extension of a title beyond three years. Normal procedures for the consideration of such a proposal apply.

4. The level of a title may be reviewed by the relevant Honorary Titles Committee on receipt of a nomination to that effect. The process for approval will follow the procedure specified above.
