Elite athletes at UniSA - Guidelines

Elite Athlete Friendly University logoSASI logoApproved: May 2005

Amendments: February 2008

Reference Authority: Director: Student and Academic Services

In 2004, the University of South Australia was endorsed by the Australian Sports Commission as an Elite Athlete Friendly University.

This means that UniSA supports the Australian Institute of Sports (AIS) Guiding Principles for Implementation of the National Network of Athlete Friendly Universities.  In so doing, UniSA recognises and promotes the value of combining sporting and academic aspirations, especially for elite athletes.  As such UniSA will arrange, where appropriate, for students to progress in their program of study while participating in sport at an elite level.

1. Definition

1.1 In accordance with AIS's guiding principles, for the purposes of gaining access to UniSA's elite athlete provisions, an applicant must be identified and recognised as an elite athlete by one of the following organisations:

2. Nominated staff contact

2.1 Applicants should contact Allan Tabor, Director: Student and Academic Services, in the first instance, to discuss application or admission to UniSA, study options available and credit arrangements.

2.2 Student and Academic Services will coordinate all applications for entry to UniSA programs and will liaise with the relevant program director and academic division to ensure appropriate consideration is given to their academic record in light of their sporting commitments.

2.3 The Director: Student and Academic Services will coordinate the support arrangements required by elite athletes. The sorts of assistance that would be provided include:

3. Flexible study options

3.1 In order to provide elite athletes with the most productive learning experience a number of personal consultations will be arranged as required.

3.2 Prior to applying, applicants will be invited to discuss program/course options, entry criteria, special consideration, flexible delivery options, remote access, examinations, academic progress, and any other issues which may impact on program choice or progress.

3.3 After entry and prior to enrolment a study plan will be negotiated. This will be retained as a reference for administering the elite athlete's academic program.

3.4 The study plan might include the following:

4. Assessments

4.1 UniSA acknowledges the need to provide a flexible framework to enable elite athletes to study and perform to the best of their ability. The need of elite athletes to undertake and/or complete an assessment task is provided for in UniSA's Assessment Policies and Procedures Manual. Variations to the assessment task need only be negotiated between the elite athlete and the course co-ordinator.

5. Enrolment needs

5.1 UniSA policy provides for flexible arrangements under special circumstances for students wishing to take extended periods of leave of absence and/or extend the maximum time required to complete a study program (such as elite athletes with sporting commitments).

5.2 Depending on the course selection, students can undertake cross institutional study (i.e. studies at other institutions), with credit arrangements in place, to ensure that those courses are appropriately credited to their UniSA program.

5.3 UniSA has a commitment to developing flexible delivery options which allow students to study in a variety of modes including the ability to move between 'off' and 'on' campus modes.

5.4 UniSA offers a number of courses in a variety of areas throughout the academic year.  A full list of courses and their timetables can be viewed on the University website.

5.5 UniSA recognises prior learning which includes an assessment for credit and exemption or studies-in-lieu of a range of prior learning from:

6. Guidelines for managing elite athletes reported to the University

6.1 The University receives a list of elite athletes from the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), the South Australian Sports Institute (SASI) or other Academies of Sport such as the Australian Football League (AFL) via the Director: Student and Academic Services on an annual basis.

6.2 The Director: Student and Academic Services' will inform the various areas of the University (by e-mail), as listed below, of the identity of the elite athletes:

7. Guidelines for managing applications from elite athletes direct

7.1 Athletes who fall outside of the organisations listed above or are not included on the list of elite athletes included within the 'definition' section of this document, may submit an application for consideration to UniSA's Director: Student and Academic Services.

7.2 The Director: Student and Academic Services will review the application and will notify the student whether the application has been approved or otherwise.

7.3 If the application is approved, the Director: Student and Academic Services will notify the relevant staff/areas of the University, as outlined in clause 6.2 above.

7.4 Student and Academic Services will maintain a register of elite athletes approved by the Director.
