School visits
The School
of Pharmacy and Medical Sciences offers a range of workshops on campus for
groups of upper primary and lower to mid high school students. This is a
great fun way for students to experience University, participate in hands on
experiments and undertake fun activities.

HANDS ON ACTIVITIES FOR STUDENT GROUPS INCLUDE:
- Slip, Slop, Slap
Make your own Zinc sunscreen cream to take home with you.
- Wash away disease
Learn how germs linger on everything we touch and how we can individually work to eradicate germs that have a huge impact on world health.
- DNA Extraction from any living thing
Be involved in the process of molecular identification of DNA found at a crime scene and how we can use it to identify the perpetrator
- Sensory Analysis of Foods
Put your taste buds to the test to identify the different sensors that affect our perception of foods.
- Visual Diagnostics.
Use your eyes to search for microscopic clues in blood and tissues. Discover how visualising cellular alterations helps medical scientists to diagnose diseases.
- Food Additives - the good, the bad and the ugly
What do you know about the additives in your favourite food? An interactive and engaging workshop that is sure to surprise you.
Each of the above sessions runs for approximately one hour and can cater
for up to 30 students at a time.

These sessions are designed to provide Science Teachers with tools to run
fun science activities in their classrooms.

- DNA for Science Teachers - This is a simple procedure, easily carried out in the classroom and designed as an introductory exercise for students in upper primary and lower secondary classes. It uses only easily available household items and chemicals and so does not need any specialised equipment or materials.
- Food Additives – The Good, the Bad and the Ugly - Food additives have a notorious reputation in our society – but do they really deserve it? What do you know about the additives in your favourite food? Will any of them cause problems? An interactive and engaging workshop with material that is applicable in the classroom setting across a number of learning areas of the school curriculum.
