Activity 3: Defining and responding to the problem of early school leavers
Objective

The objectives of this exercise are to consider

  1. how early school leavers are defined as a problem in Samoa
  2. the reasoning behind this definition
  3. how this reasoning is reflected in programs and policies that impact on early school leavers

Time required: 90 minutes

Task
This activity requires you to work in small groups. You will be asked to form a group with other representatives of your Ministry to address the following topics:
  1. Consider how early school leavers are defined as a problem in Samoa, and by whom.
  2. Identify policies and programs from your Ministry that impact directly or indirectly on the issue of early school leavers.
  3. Discuss the reasoning behind your Ministry's policies and programs that have an impact on early school leavers.
Please nominate a person in your group to record your answers on a large sheet of paper (to be provided).
Summary method
At the end of the activity your group will be asked to feed back your answers to the whole workshop group. You may choose to do this together as a group with reference to your answers recorded on a large sheet of paper, or you may wish to nominate a spokesperson, or spokespersons to provide feedback to the whole workshop group.
